Gronk is pretty close to 'Ewing Theory' where a team seems to play better in his absence despite having great numbers and being well known for being great. The most recent parallel here is Calvin Johnson. I think Gronk is in the same category as Megatron.

A contrast would be someone like Von Miller who if he got injured then the entire Broncos defense would probably regress to mediocre almost instantly. Kelce is that guy for the Chiefs, too, but part of that might be Alex Smith or Andy Reid.

Based on stats, there's no question.

But I hesitate to give a blanket yes. At least not yet. A combination of QB & scheme definitely help Gronk. But there's no denying the stats. You just have to wonder what sort of numbers Gonzalez would have put up if he played within that system with the GOAT QB. That "what if" game only gets you so far though. Once Gronk dominates the stat categories, injury-plagued or not, he'll have to be in the discussion of the best ever TE.

In a single season, you could make the argument. In a career. The answer is simply no.

Gronk has moments of greatness but he's hurt often. If you need a big play he can be that guy, if he's not inactive. Jason Witten has more upside than Gronk. Gronk is top 10 though.

Jason Witten has more upside than Gronk? In what alternate dimension? That's about as absurd a statement I've read all week

Sure, he'd had his share of injuries, but I still say he's in the top 3 all-time as of right now; 2-3 more seasons of playing at his level, and it will be inarguable, he will have been the best TE ever

Yes, and written has been "decent" for the 5 of those last 7, and essentially washed up the last 2

now that is just ignorance talking. Classic example of fans paying attention solely to stats.

Can anyone imagine TEs laying out like current ones do in the previous eras? Gronk and Kelce got knocked out in the playoffs but in previous eras that would be every. single. game.

After seeing some of the things Ditka has said and done I'm pretty sure that those old guys took some serious hits and never got the chance to really pad their stats like the modern TEs. Winslow is pretty much where the modern TE starts and his career would've been much better in this era.

Anyone who thinks witten is on the same level of, or better than, gronkowski, is either an idiot or homer, or both, period

Okay then. Congrats to you
Thanks. My comment wasnt to if Witten was as good as Gronk.
It was just simply to your Silly ass comment you made.
Someone else was making the comment you are referring too.

Your problem isn't with Gronk, it's that he's a Patriot. If he played for the Falcons, you'd have entirely different opinion.

Gronk's not a brittle bitch, he's been cheap shotted for the past 5 years. He's so big we can't tackle him unless we take him out by the knees or head.

By the end of next year he'll own every record for a TE and won't have had to play 30 years to get them.
Gronk is brittle so he doesn't get my vote.

wittin will be easily considered a top 10 TE all time when he retires, if not top 5. He will be second all time in receptions for TE's and perhaps the best blocking TE ever. Total team first guy and the poster boy for tightends...regardless of the era. Tough hombre
