Style points could come into play. Army currently sits at #16 and Boise State and #13. It's close but I don't see an Army leapfrog happening without a Boise loss.

Yet, if Army beats Notre Dame on the road, many will start asking the same questions you are asking. It could get interesting

You gotta factor in the appeal to have Army in there. But i dont see them beating ND and Navy even.

Army has had some great teams back in the day. Army was a national power back in the 1940s with claims to three national titles. But in the last 25 years, Boise State has been an absolute beast.

I think I am with the majority here.

If they beat ND, that definitely makes it a debate worth having.

But I don't think they will beat Notre Dame.

Boise is undoubtedly the better program, the appeal with Army is Patriotic imo.

The Military Academies have the disadvantage of the military commitment required upon graduation. NFL-pursuing players aren't going to go there in today's society. Back in those days, military-life had better pay than playing pro football. Like a lot of jobs in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Pro sports pay, at one time, was abysmally bad.

Military Academies will never again be what they were because the top athletes will no longer go there.

This year, I think Boise also benefits from having a Heisman contender at half back.

One other point, it's a longshot but if both Army and Boise State win out, there's a chance they both could be ranked in the top 12 and thus both get a bid (I think)

I'd prefer it to 3 loss ole miss or something.

Think they deserve to be in over the 4th ranked sec team with 2 losses. Losses have to matter.
This is why strength of schedule is important in the rankings. The current 4th ranked SEC team is Tennessee. They've beaten Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida and Kentucky. Army hasn't played a team as good as any of those. True, they have two losses, to Georgia and Arkansas, both on the road. Army doesn't have a team anywhere nearly as good as Georgia on their schedule. They haven't played as team as good as Arkansas yet. Sure, Army is unbeaten so far, but all of Army's wins so far have been against teams that SEC teams schedule as cupcakes:

Lehigh
FAU
Rice
Temple
Tulsa
UAB
East Carolina
Air Force
North Texas

Schedule has to matter.

just glanced at Army's schedule and their conference. funny how they've played the bottom 5 teams, and luckily don't play Tulane or a couple other top tier conf. teams.

Let's see what happens. they have ND and Navy left. IF they win out, I'm good at putting them in.

but, being realistic, I don't think they'll beat the irish, even though I'll be cheering for them. no way do the service academies have the athletes to compete with perennial top 10 teams imo.

The real question is if Army beats ND how far do they drop? Army would have 1 ranked win to Boise's 2 (WSU & UNLV) and a close loss to the #1 team would look better than Armys win over a ND team that might drop to the 20s or even out of the top 25. If they did fall out, Army would have zero ranked wins.

Just to put things in perspective, last year Army played LSU, a 2 loss SEC team. The final score was LSU 62-0 Army. Records between different conferences are not comparable, especially when one of them is the SEC. Competition in the SEC is fierce. LSU beat Ole Miss, Ole Miss beat Georgia, Georgia beat Tennessee, Tennessee beat Alabama, Alabama beat LSU. Just because an SEC team has two losses doesn't mean they're not still good.

I have to laugh at the CFB world.

arguing nonstop about playoff rankings.

I remember the last 2-3 years hearing that once we moved to a 12 team playoff that all the problems would be solved. YEs, I did hear that.

Yeah, I think it would be more accurate to say that the old problems would go away - to be replaced by new problems.

Army hasn't really played anybody with a pulse, so hard to tell just how good that defense is. I suppose there's something to be said for holding the North Texas offense to 3 points, they are 16th in PPG and averaging 6.9 yards per play (Army held them to 283 yards on 5.1 YPP)

This is why I'm in favor of two separate 8-team playoffs. The G-5 would potentially include these teama...

Army (9-0)
Boise St (9-1)
Jacksonville St (7-3)
Louisiana (8-2)
Marshall (7-3)
Miami (OH) (7-4)
Ohio (8-3)
Tulane (9-2)
UNLV (9-2)
