You dont think higher annual average salary makes a difference?

Its all that should matter.
No dog in the fight but this seems fair. In your example, if amount of overall money is very close, but one guy has 1 less year, I'd say the one with 1 less year is the better contract for the player.

Just my opinion.

Common sense says 15M>10M / year

True, but not so sure 1 year and 15 mil is better than 3 and 30. Or 3 and 39 mil.

True, but whom is offering either, 1 yr/15M?

As far as betting, though, you cant just go by biggest amount if term is totally different.

As I said, no dog in the fight for me, but hard to come up with set rules for this type of bet.

Really only way to do it is hope the 2 of you can decide, or maybe pick 3 people you both agree on to vote for the winner.

He just doesn't really want to bet ( fake money), obviously.

My guess is Whiteside gets more money, and multiple years but as like his opinion, its just that, a guess.

Its really not that hard.
I say Whiteside makes more money next year.

It's a shame because the timing is so good to let the market tell us who's better. I guess we don't need a bet to see what happens with their next contracts to settle it.

Whiteside is being handed a golden opportunity to earn another nice pay day.
I really think he’ll thrive in Portland.

I am perfectly happy to bet that Tristan Thompson gets a bigger contract and more money

You mean longer contract?

Bet should either be
A. Earns more next season or
B. Average salary / year of contract signed next summer.

You choose.

I am willing to bet that Tristan Thompson receives a bigger contract with more guaranteed money than Hassan Whiteside.

Thats so open ended.
What if last year is team option vs player option?

Again, by your thinking, 4 yr 42 beats 3 year 38, for example.

You claim to be a numbers guy.
Do the math.

Possible gonna be a tough bet to judge. I think they need to hope it's an obvious winner. If not, designate 3 people they agree on to decide the winner.

Maybe what they could do is extend the bet until they have the same number of years. Meaning, if they receive the contracts you mention above, bet is not over until you see what the 3-year guy gets in year 4.

Though who wants to make a 4 year bet?
