Any team that acquires Jordan Staal without an extension would be making a HUGE mistake. I don't see Staal signing an extension with any team other than Carolina. The Hurricanes have no reason to give up assets to acquire Staal since he could simply play out his contract & sign with them after the season.

If Edmonton or anyone else is dumb enough to acquire him they're going to regret it.

I don't think anyone thinks this deal happens without an extension...and I have no idea why people think he'd only play in PIT or CAR. The rumors are that he doesn't like being third fiddle, but he'd be okay with second fiddle behind his older brother?

Yakupov is getting all this hype, yet he couldn't even lead his OHL team to a first round playoff victory. Now maybe that could be attributed to his getting his bell rung earlier in the regular season which to me just sends up additional red flags.

Yeah, I mean you look at what a guy like Perry was doing in London, and it still took him until he was 26-years-old to live up to his potential in the NHL. Hell, Jordan Staal isn't even 26 yet. What if the Oilers have to wait until 2020 to get the full value of Yakupov?

I heard the Red Wings are going to sign all the top name free agents, and their defensemen are all getting lobotomies!

Call me crazy, but Edmonton is currently loaded up front with Eberle, Hall (although that wonky shoulder is cause for concern) and the Nuge. They need another forward like Vancouver needs a goalie.

they still have to take the best player available.
trade some of those forwards for D, but who knows what the hell Lowebellini would concoct in the trade market.
might be fun

Didn't read every post...so excuse me if I repeat....but any trade involving Staal must include Paul Martin....that is all...

Why does anyone think the Staal brothers are so eager to play together? They never bring that up and when asked about it, they don't respond enthusiastically or anything.

I'm not sure I would even do a swap from a Pens perspective. Staal is a hot commodity - only 23 years old, won a Cup, proven playoff performer, just had what would have been a career year if not for fluky injuries (50 points in 62 games), currently puts up all his points ES/SH, eats up all the tough minutes, excellent penalty killer, etc. Everyone I see him compared to (he's not as good as Kesler!) wasn't doing shit at 23, let alone having all that experience.

As for the contract, 1) didn't Burns fetch a nice return with one year left? 2) Any team that took him without an extension would do so knowing that they have a damn good shot at re-signing him, whether that's through getting permission to talk to him or just knowing they have a shitload of money to throw at him.
I'd be more inclined to want to see him shipped out with Martin for a proven asset.

i believe JJG was being sarcastic in saying they need to throw in letang.. that would really help the flyers haha.. i think letang by himself is worth more than the 1st round pick

i think staal (+?) for yakupov makes perfect sense for the pens if the + is a non-impact roster player or mid-level draft pick.. or less..

again, who knows what edmonton is thinking if they do this.. IMO what staal would bring that is 'needed' can be had by a 1 mil/per player.. they need people playing defense, whether its at forward or an actual defender.. jordan staal on the 2nd line with the likes of hemsky or mpj (whatever the hell that guy's name is haha) isn't going to do a whole lot of defending

Correct! I'd be really happy if that happened.

This ^. For the love of God, this ^.

I've seen this twice now from a Pens poster. No offense, Pix and the other Pens poster who said this (can't remember now who), you both are awesome fans and posters.....but this is no contest. You put Eric Staal as a 2nd/3rd Line Center and that Pens team still wins the Stanley Cup. You put Jordan on the Canes and it just doesn't happen.

Jordan may eventually become better if this wasn't just a down year for Eric, but he's got some work ahead of him.

That was me who said this before... and it was meant more as a joke towards Biz in a thread he made a while ago.

It's pretty clear from a statistical standpoint that Eric Staal has a higher value than Jordan in the here and now. You have to give Jordan his due, though because of the role he plays on the Pens, compared to what Eric plays for the Canes.

Jordan hasn't had the consistent opportunity to play an offensive game like his older brother has. Since he's been in the game, Jordan's been the 3rd line center, and tasked with the responsibility of shutting down the opponent's top line.

As to your assumption that you could have taken Jordan off that 09 SC team of Pittsburgh, and still have them winning the cup with Eric, instead... I respectfully disagree with you.

Jordan and his line scored the first goal of game 6 against Detroit, not to mention an enormous short-handed goal in game 4, and effectively eliminated Zetterberg's line from factoring into the scoring in games 6 & 7, and for the most part... the whole series, which ultimately decided the outcome. Eric doesn't have the same qualities that his younger brother has, and the qualities Eric possesses doesn't include being a superior defensive player.

Only time will tell what happens with Jordan and Pittsburgh, but before everyone gets too excited in here, I think the CBA needs to be ironed out a bit more.

What's this "CBA" you speak of. I mean, I've only been watching since the inception of the league and it's founder Sidney Crosby took the ice.

Gotcha, I knew it was a poster I respected, but I didn't remember the SN, sorry. :)

Fair enough, there are way too many variables to throw in to a Stanley Cup to say something definitively. I think Eric is better NOW, but Jordan could be the best when it's all said and done.

Haha :dhd:

ZING

It all comes down to the new CBA. If the cap # gets a big enough bump, this discussion becomes a moot point. I have no idea how this upcoming business negotiation will work out between the owners and the NHLPA. I know one thing, Donnie Fehr frightens me

Personally... I think Jordan is the worst of the 3. Marc is a stud, and Eric is the best of the 3.

I have a feeling next year he'll play worthy of about $5.5 million...he's paid $4million this year, which is a good deal, and will be paid that next year as well, but even with the cap going up, $7million is insane territory. Toews/Kane are paid in the 6mil ballpark, Parise is 6mill, Marleau, Brad Richards, etc. So...he could be close to that range, but still, he should be closer to 5.5ish, not 7. Pens can't afford 7 regardless.
