Does Edmonton want to rebuild forever?

The Oilers should trade away the No. 1 draft pick for somebody who can help the team right now (maybe a quality defenseman) and get a lower first round draft pick in exchange to select another defenseman in a draft deep with rearguards. They should also try hard to sign goalie Josh Harding.

Of course, they probably won't do any of the above.

Yeah, I don't know who else out there can stop the defensive bleeding (are there any reliable defensemen? I mean, other than the franchise players like Drew "$56 Million" Doughty...). I don't see Yakupov doing anything that RNH and Eberle and Hall aren't already doing.

Maybe if Edmonton puts the "boys" back on "the bus," they'll be relevant again.

Jordan Staal rumors surfaced around game 3 when he was the only Penguin visible on the ice...and now they seem to be picking up steam. All I know is, I HOPE he's this over-valued.

Should the Edmonton Oilers trade their top pick for Jordan Staal? | Edmonton Journal

*Jaw hangs* Do it.

I mean, who needs some crazy good Russian winger, ammiright?

Now, I can actually see this being a good trade for both teams, because the Oilers need something more than scoring up front, and Staal offers a different aspect up front. BUT, he'd have to sign long term there first. So, this probably won't happen.

They need to throw Letang in as well and then you've got a deal.

Okkkkay, now I think people are overvaluing the unknown of a first rounder...Yakupov is very likely going to be a great player in this league, but it's more of a risk for the Pens than it is for the Oilers if you think about it. Jordan is the best of the Staal brothers, but I seriously think he needs to be the top guy to see that.

I know Eric had a bad year last year, but career wise, it's no contest. Eric Staal is the best Staal.

Edit: And he still put up 70 points in a bad year.

Best all around Staal? Obviously I watch one more than the others, but he's come into his own in the second half of this season. I guess it was premature.

This ^. For the love of God, this ^.

I've seen this twice now from a Pens poster. No offense, Pix and the other Pens poster who said this (can't remember now who), you both are awesome fans and posters.....but this is no contest. You put Eric Staal as a 2nd/3rd Line Center and that Pens team still wins the Stanley Cup. You put Jordan on the Canes and it just doesn't happen.

Jordan may eventually become better if this wasn't just a down year for Eric, but he's got some work ahead of him.

Do people really think the Pens would have to throw in more? It's a draft pick. Staal is a legit player. He's what most teams hope for from a first-rounder. Sure, Yakupov could turn out to be a better player, or he could completely flake.

The real question is whether or not Jordan Staal is signed to an extension or not. Nobody is trading one of the first three draft picks (I heard MTL was curious too, and I think he'd be a better fit there to be honest) for Staal signed at only one more year.

Yakupov for Staal and Letang is downright insane, whoever said that. And Eric is clearly the best Staal.

Don't like it. Jordan is good, but is he number 1 overall pick good? He'd have a lot more pressure on him than he did in Pitt in terms of leadership and being the top line center (I believe he could succeed at both), I just feel Edmonton could get more for that pick.

IMO yes.
And they know exactly what they're getting.

Nail Y.might pan out,but there are no guarantees as per Patrick Stefan,Alexandre Daigle,Brian Lawton and Doug Wickenheiser-all #1 picks that came no where near their hype.

#1 overall pick > Jordan Staal

#1 overall pick < Jordan Staal + Kris Letang

If I'm the Oil I would want Staal plus a 2nd or 3rd for my first overall. If I'm the Pens, there's no way I move Letang and Staal without a hell of a lot more than a single draft pick coming back. The Pens already have their stud offensive weapons. They need to overhaul the D and bring in wingers who can run with Sid and Malkin.

Hey, Pens need to overhaul their D? Wings need to overhaul their D! Let's put all the names into a hat and see what our teams look like when we get done!

i believe JJG was being sarcastic in saying they need to throw in letang.. that would really help the flyers haha.. i think letang by himself is worth more than the 1st round pick

i think staal (+?) for yakupov makes perfect sense for the pens if the + is a non-impact roster player or mid-level draft pick.. or less..

again, who knows what edmonton is thinking if they do this.. IMO what staal would bring that is 'needed' can be had by a 1 mil/per player.. they need people playing defense, whether its at forward or an actual defender.. jordan staal on the 2nd line with the likes of hemsky or mpj (whatever the hell that guy's name is haha) isn't going to do a whole lot of defending

Ah, sorry, I knew I shouldn't have bought my sarcasm detector at Goodwill.

Yeah, I don't know why they would make this trade. You would think they would use that pick to either keep stocking the arsenal, bring in a goalie, or beef up the defense. Not add more forwards, even if they are defensive forwards.

??? generalizing just a little bit on 'first rounder'
first pick overall, with Yakupov available is hardly just a first rounder.

Yakupov will be a serious asset right from the get go, and at entry level pricing for the next three years.
Staal is entering the pay-day years after this next season. that factors into it as well.
also, as he's a UFA then, unless you are positive you can lock him up, you are trading for him for ONE season, and then a huge unknown.

Yakupov is getting all this hype, yet he couldn't even lead his OHL team to a first round playoff victory. Now maybe that could be attributed to his getting his bell rung earlier in the regular season which to me just sends up additional red flags.

Call me crazy, but Edmonton is currently loaded up front with Eberle, Hall (although that wonky shoulder is cause for concern) and the Nuge. They need another forward like Vancouver needs a goalie.

I'm making the assumption that the deal comes with an extension. No way it occurs otherwise.

I agree with this, which is why I'd question the deal. They could use a guy like Staal though...but they have a lot of guys with the same skill set.
