As adults they are incapable of being productive adults and subsequently many that are capable enough to do something, are sent to a sheltered workshop where they work at earning as a much as 50 cents an hour. Normally the don't live past about 40 years of age because they are also born with birth defects. The oldest I have seen was a young woman who lived to be 50 years when she died. That was actually a record because she was well cared for. The sheltered workshops are also non-profit organizations started by people with the skills and deep pockets. They don't have to make a profit, but they are well paid and usually have a board of directors to work independently from the CEO and other officers.
