I thought this would be a good time for a thread to discuss what teams will be hurt or helped by the loss of this season.

I was thinking about this a little bit earlier today. If this season is lost, does anyone expect a big shake-up in team dominance? For example, the Canucks, Preds, Coyotes, Flyers and Rangers are coming off of a pretty strong couple of seasons. Do you expect the momentum to die down for most of those?

I think it all depends all how quickly this lockout gets settled and what the schedule looks like (i.e. will all games be within your conference with a focus mainly on divisional play?). If that's the case, the Canucks should feast on the rest of the NW division.

Coyotes - I'm still not sold on Mike Smith and I think they could feel the loss of Ray Whitney up front more than they think.

Preds - Every year I expect them to take a step back and every year Trotz leads them to the playoffs. Somehow, they'll find a way to be there again.

Rangers - Great core of young players, they'll be strong again.

Flyers - Only thing holding them back is goaltending (nothing new, right?)

The Sharks are getting real old, and I believe their farm system sucks.
This will hurt them for sure.

i agree w/ this.. the sharks are looking at a bumpy road ahead unless they pull a flyers and trade away their whole team for young star prospects/draft picks

plus as they mentioned on the radio ... Shane Doan ... notorious slow starter ... older legs ... i think the coyotes will suffer because of it

full season helps and hurts Vancouver. It doesnt affect Nashville at all. I think losing Suter hurts them more than anything than the lockout will. Vancouver loses a year on contracts and some players getting older (burrows, sedins to be specific) but it helps on injuries that need a long time healing (kesler) and can help for some extra rest for the team as a whole. its hard to say what we will be with Corey Schnedier as starter for 65+ games noone knows. he looks fantastic but such minimum games played but the ones he did play were big time games and big time performances. also depends on the return for Luongo. I truly believe the moment that CBA is signed Luongo is moved 15 mins later. things will happen fast.

I agree with both of these unfortunately. I was hoping (though I knew there was .0001% chance) that they'd trade Thornton to Columbus to play with Nash (for Johansen).....then, in my video game world, I was hoping they'd trade Marleau to Montreal for Kaberle (as a salary dump), Kristo and a 1st Rounder.

Funny thing is, in 2008, I thought the Sharks were the only Bay Area team with a shot at winning anything for the forseeable future. Now, the Giants have won 2 WS Championships, the 49ers look tough and even the Golden State Warriors look like they're finally starting to turn it around a little. The Sharks just keep getting older, slower and still have no balls to speak of.

I'm really not a fan at all of Marleau and Thornton. Those two need to go asap (in my not so humble opinion).

Bryz was good for 1/2 his games=1/2 season.problem solved.

Canucks should be alright, especially as dash mentioned if we have a heavier divisional schedule.
what the team looks like with Luongo gone, if that is what is happening, is anyone's guess.
both in terms of what would come back, and if Schneider can indeed carry the load.

SJ's core is old, and Couture can't carry the future on his own.

Nashville is handcuffed financially due to Weber, and are now short one 30 minute per night d-man in Suter

Boston could be in for a tough go, as every player in the league should take out their hate for J.J. on his team. At least, I hope so :)

IF the season is lost, then it will be really expensive for Edmonton to burn a year of their ELC deals for each of their stars playing in Oklahoma. Pushed Lowebellini into making some difficult choices sooner rather than later.

Sorry filo, you're stuck with Merlot and Jumbo Jim - Now, if you're willing to part with Couture and Pavelski, then we can talk turkey.

I think a 1/2 season definitely helps Detroit. All getting long in the tooth, and trades or draft picks are going to be their remedy in near future.

i like this logic. that'd be awesome.

flyers get some help in terms of injuries as well (timonen, mesz specifically, but grossmann's knees could probably use the rest too).. the flyers were looking at starting the season with bourdon, gervais/lilja, and gustaffsson in the top 6

If the returns were high enough, (and hypothetically I were the GM) I'd be willing to listen. Pavelski can't keep up with good skating defensemen. Once you get into the later rounds of the playoffs, he gets more and more inept/shut down. He's a very useful player and great for the regular season grind (can shoot, is smart, wins faceoffs), but his lack of skating ability would at least allow me to listen to offers.....although I wouldn't mind just retaining him too. For Couture, I'd never actively shop him, but I'd be willing to listen to offers if somebody were to blow me away. I love Couture, he's a great all-around player, but his injury history scares me (this is the only reason), so I'd at least listen to offers. That said, the deal would have to be absolutely ridiculously loaded with young NHL ready talent and draft picks.

Hey, both of our teams have a lot of crap on it, how about Thornton and Murray for Blowmeester, Glencross and Stempniak??? :heh:

yup i think hes unofficially (of course) already been moved

they just are gonna delay the announcement so it doesnt look like they talked during the lockout

A short season likey won't do much to help Suter & Parise 'jell' with the rest of the Minnesota line-up. Given how horribly banged up the Wild were down the stretch last season, though, I suspect that they are already feeling better about their prospects for getting through this season - provided that there is one - more or less intact.

At the same time, not many lines will return and make an instant impact. I feel like Parise's one of the easier forwards to play with because of his grasp of the game. Suter just needs a partner that can handle their side of the ice.

I'm actually surprised that no one mentioned the Flyers losing a year of Giroux playing for next to nothing. It's not as bad as what's happening to Edmonton, but it's a year lost where they could really make a run at the Cup with a very favorable roster salary.

The Sabres have a few good youngsters in the AHL and in the juniors. The extra time down their will help these kids IMO. I know the Sabres were not one of the teams mentioned but it's just my view from their end.
