How much did moving in the fences help?

There are obviously a ton of variables to account for in comparing the team's home and away performance this year and last but I will do my best.

So the obvious stats:
2013 Home: 310 R 88 HR .239 BA .387 SLG
2013 Away: 314 R 100 HR .235 BA .392 SLG

2012 Home: 257 R 56 HR .220 BA .331 SLG
2012 Away: 362 R 93 HR .247 BA .403 SLG

When you compare the two splits the biggest thing that sticks out to me is that the Mariners difference in performance really began to thin.

Could it be that it was just the addition of Morales, Ibanez, Morse and Bay? Or maybe that moving in the fences just had an impact on the psyche of Mariners players?

Well here is a look at the performance of opposing hitters against Mariners pitchers:
2013 Home: 376 R 82 HR .254 BA .403 SLG 4.18 ERA
2013 Away: 378 R 92 HR .265 BA .431 SLG 4.47 ERA

2012 Home: 260 R 60 HR .229 BA .338 SLG 2.97 ERA
2012 Away: 391 R 106 HR .266 BA .449 SLG 4.59 ERA

Huge difference in the pitching performance by Mariners pitchers at home. You could explain that by a change in pitching staff but as you can see the road performance is relatively similar to what it was in 2012.

So it appears as if moving in the fences did have a positive impact on our offensive performance but appears to have had an even bigger negative impact on our pitchers.

When it comes to measuring the impact of bringing in the fences, total HR numbers are more important than any other stat.

The M's hit a lot of homers overall this year.

Anybody know how many home runs the M's hit at Safeco last year vs this year? Same with opposing teams at Safeco last year vs this year?

Anyhoo, until the M's get within 15 games of .500, it doesn't matter what the fences did. Just more smoke and mirrors of an indifferent ownership and FO pretending they care. And it works. Every damn year.

The real number that would interest me is how many home runs did the M's and opponents hit this year that wouldn't have been home runs last year. Not sure anyone kept a record of something like that though. Not surprisingly bringing in the fences did nothing to help the Mariners win, because the issue with this team has zero to do with Safeco Field's dimensions.

I stopped watching sometime in July I think. By then I was randomly catching games (barely) and I had some really good luck because I actually caught some decent ones where we won.

I included those stats in the original post.

Here they are again for your reference:

Mariners home runs at Safeco:
2013: 88 HRs
2012: 56 HRs

Opposing teams home runs at Safeco:
2013: 82 HRs
2012: 60 HRs

This was the attitude of most people towards the Seahawks from 2008 to 2012. Now everyone pretends like they've been a diehard fan forever.

I would know, I was among the 7 people left on the Seahawks boards during that period on CBS.

Isnt it funny how that works:agree:
I think it is the "stuck in the couch syndrome" lol. "don't go to the games" "don't support the team till they get new owners" "we know what's best for this team and you should do what we do"

Then the team starts winning and it's "I knew it all along and I told you so"
makes me laugh

I think the big measuring stick on a team the way the Mariners are currently built is doubles over HR's. I don't really think anyone outside of maybe Smoak is a pure HR hitter. I think it would help the confidence significantly of guys like Ackley, Miller, Seager, Franklin and Zunino if the fences were as they were last year. HR's are the sexy think but in my opinion driving the ball into the gaps is all of these guys strengths.
