Bonds had a lot of good things to say about him so hopefully the batting tips + Morse's power will translate to some bombs. However, I was listening to the game yesterday and the broadcasters said something about him leaving kind of early on in the game and they weren't sure why. I just caught a bit of the conversation, so I don't have any other info and haven't found anything online yet. Hopefully it's nothing.

He re-aggrivated an existing calf injury.

Morse's production is directly related to how many games he will play, and that's a HUGE unknown at this point.

Wow that sucks....I'd rest him the rest of the way to get that thing right.

If he can avoid striking out to much, I think he'll be a good fit.

On McCovey Chronicles they posted a stat comparison showing Morse's hitting numbers (swing through %, breaking ball strike %, etc) matched up pretty closely with.....Aaron Rowand.

It was....troubling. :L

I'm not saying our 7th place hitter is the most important thing in the world but we don't have a lot of room for error vs the Dodgers.

Ugh.
The problem is that we mostly got him for his bat. His defense is historically pretty bad.

The Nationals saw that, and were trying to transition him to be a more full time 1B. However, the Giants are loaded with guys that can play 1B already, so, no place to hide that glove in S.F.

If we get strong production from thin Panda, Belt, Posey, Pagan, and the rest Morse's bat won't be that important and he'll start fewer games and get pulled earlier. It's a big if but we're going to need things like that to work out to catch the Dogs. In 2010 and 2012 the 'ifs' worked out, we need that again this year.

If we get enough production out of Posey, Panda, Pagan, Pence, petc that we do not need his bat, than he should not be playing at all anyway. Furthermore, his bat potential is not enough to carry the team.

So remind me again why we signed him instead of going with the Blanco/Perez platoon in left?

You'll have to ask the guy who signed him, although you might have to wait for him to get back from the ring polishing store. :heh:

I kid, I kid...I'm with you I thought this was a kind of 'what's the point signing'. Then again it was pretty low risk, if he turns out to be useful with the bat, fine. And if not we can pretty quickly bench him for that platoon.

Because if there is an injury to Pence or Pagan, then we aren't stuck playing BOTH Perez and Blanco. A la last year with Torres and Blanco.

This is the only argument that holds any water.

The prob is that I think our situation, sans injuries, is stronger WITHOUT him than it is with him.

PS...

I hope to have to eat crow by the end of the season due to this signing. I just don't see the logic at this point.

I get the felling it's going to be one or the other 4 to 7 or..... 20 to 25 no in between, if he doesn't put up many in the 1st quarter of the season we may not see much of him except for pinch hitter.

'sans injuries' doesnt happen very often...at the very least we have depth and that's no small thing in a 162 game season. Our team is built to do well in the regular season, we'll see if we have the starting pitching to go deep in the postseason

Agreed about the barbell probabilities. Either he can hit and he'll play or he can't and he won't.

IMO, I would put the over/under at 6.5.

Injury-prone, not getting any younger, putrid glove, ATT Park.

Morse 2013 overlay at ATT:

Gotta give him credit for hitting them to all fields, though.

Anything close to the line (and behind it) probably wouldn't be a HR at AT&T, due to the height of the walls not in LF. (The map is "true" distance, so a 15 foot wall makes a big difference.) Most of the HRs to CF and RF last year wouldn't have been HRs at AT&T.

I don't know how to generate the map and overlay - could you generate one for 2011? Pretty please?
