That is bad.

Air must be venting from the laptop at all times. A lot of electricity is going through a computer, and heat is made because of this........it must be released or the hardware can be ruined physically.

I don't think where you place it is bad but if it's overeating it will burn out your motherboard. If you have a can of compressed air I would try blowing it out first.

Where am I supposed to put it? Hold it in the air?

I dont really know much about computers but do know a little about this problem:

1) Your battery could be going bad which is causing it to have to be charged more often and is causing the battery and the area around the power plug to heat up.

2) Your fan could be clogged.

3) You are possibly blocking the vents by setting it on you leg.

I would also quit setting it on the bed and such, not only for the heat it traps but the dust is sucks in. FWIW i'd buy a cooling tray.

So, I took the battery out for 30 minutes and kept the laptop plugged in. The laptop didn't cool down at all and kept whirring. I popped the battery back in after 30 minutes and it's charging!

Is it possible the fan is overworking and got the battery so hot that it stopped working temporarily and is now ok because I took it out and let it cool down?

I don't know - is the fan still whirring with the battery in?
