Yeah, I just remember Red Wing fans being big fans of Team Sweden in 2006. I think they had Lidstrom, Zetterbergh, Franzen, & Kronwall on that team.

So does that mean all of Europe and part of Asia are all Red Wing fans.

Probably, but I would hope the Czech Republic is still filled with Penguin fans, we represented them hardcore back in the day.

I think any gay men who saw photos of Zetterberg's wedding have already disowned him as a spokesman, so it's on Lundqvist.

/maybe he should take up for prisoner's rights?

Not too long ago, the Red Wings had nine Swedes on the team at once.

Yeah, I remember during the 1990s they were all Russians, then during the 2000s they went all Swede. Rather clever way of putting a team together, they could communicate in languages most other teams wouldn't understand.

Lundqvist comments on the backlash from not commenting on Russia's anti-gay laws,

“I agree with that. It’s important that the Olympics don’t become a political place. Every country has its own issues. The history of the Olympics shows that each [site] has had some serious issues.”
… “Of course as a private person, I will express my support for equal rights and my opposition to laws that go against that. I think I can use my position to do some good, but the time and the place have to be right.”

China has a horrible record regarding human rights violations, yet I don't recall a large movement/following to boycott the Summer Olympics in 2008. I wouldn't be surprised if Lundqvist was told by the Swedish Olympic Federation to keep quiet regarding the Sochi Olympics and their current stance regarding alternative lifestyles and he's simply following orders.

/In other words, leave Henrik alone.

Good point... of course, it would look pretty hypocritical for a bunch of people to send out tweets about how evil China is on their iPads and Galaxies...

In Czech Republic they follow Czech Extraliga. I'm sure they watch KHL as well. Probably some NHL also (bet you they follow whomever Jagr is playing for).

So there must be a lot of Atlantic(Metrosexual) division fans in Europe then.

To be resorted, there weren't any sports with a major push to fight against child labor, using their biggest stars, at the time...

I remember once Keith Primeau showed up in a pre-game skate with "rov" on the end of his name on his jersey so it said "Primeaurov". He said he wasn't happy with his ice time and he thought if the coaches thought he was Russian he'd play more.

One of the few times I liked him.

He was traded shortly thereafter.

Marc Crawford had a good anecdote:
He started to think he was Russian when he played in Vancouver.
Everytime he heard his name it was the coach yelling "Get that Crawfordov!"

I don't know if it was the addition of Shanahan that pushed the Wings over the edge for the Cup that year, or the subtraction of Coffey.

Good point Dash.

Just to play Devil's advocate, Canada (host of 2010) has a pretty poor record when it comes to the treatment of natives and even French Canadians if you look at it close enough.

That being said Russia has gone out of its way to actively litigate against a minority. Canada and China (at least not as openly) haven't done that. It's unacceptable and I applaud Zetterberg for speaking out against it.
