I know people will say he just doesnt have the talent on the defensive side of the ball. But we are giving up 500 yards a game. thats more than just talent issues. thats poor coaching.

Agree. For those maintaining that you don't fire coaches mid-season or that a replacement will be no better please just give me ONE reason why this guy is a decent coach. Just one - waiting....

Again - my fear is that if he survives this season there is a chance that he returns next season - arrrggghhhh......

Last week, I was debating you, saying while I am not happy with Haz, we had no one to replace him. After today, something has to change. They were without their stud RB and we still gave up 500 yards. We now hold the record to the most yards ever given up in the first 3 games. Anyone has to be better than the product Haz is putting out there right now. So I have now jumped on the bandwagon. Time to shake things up.

Yes...get rid of him...now.

I know the D is what it is, and I have to think it will improve some over the course of the season. It will not from 32 to 15...There needs to be a good offseason plan in place. We need a solid replacement for London Fletcher and a big time DB (or two)

It was time for Haslett to go last season. This has gone on far too long. Time to send a message to the team that this is not acceptable defense. I agree that players make plays, players make tackles etc... However, it's painfully obvious this defense is poorly coached, the scheme all but blows and guys are not buying in any longer. Time to make a change and now!

Again, I like to stress how important it is to be WILLING to can a coach midseason. While some think it's a bad idea, or it's something Shanny wouldn't do, or it's pointless for this season... I point you to last year.

Had we done it last year, when we were having this same discussion, we would have already been a year into a new direction, most likely a better one (can't get worse).

_________________________________________________________

The opinion above was posted on another forum similar to this one and - to me - this is right on the money! This is my biggest fear. If the the team & the fans keep claiming "It isn't the coaches fault" or "Whoever takes over is not going to do better" is missing the point.

You need to send a msg that everyone is accountable & at least consider changes that will have the potential for improvement. If you keep the status quo - both coaches & players to a large degree - for this defense there is a good chance this team is in the same position next year defensively.

Why not at least consider a coaching change. If it is also a failure at the end of the season - so what - it at least sent up a red flag that a completely new coaching staff is needed next season. Loyalty is great but not at the expense of having a dreadful defense for years on end & one that apparently is accountable to nobody (i.e. if they fail they can always maintain that it was the offense's fault).

What is his scheme and what should we change to?

Scheme
That's a good question Sportster... What is his scheme?
Well, the scheme that has Orakpo and Kerrigan in coverage is flat out wrong and awful.
The scheme that allows only 4 rush man in obvious passing downs, flat out wrong and ineffective.
The scheme that allows other teams QB's to torch us over the middle for NFL history numbers, stinks!
The scheme that has these certain players on his starting defense, well that's on him.
The scheme that has our players missing tackles at an alarming rate, coaching!
The scheme that does not have our players making plays all over the field, coaching!
The scheme that continues to show inconsistency's, no energy & poor execution, coaching!

Change
Let's start off with this is not acceptable and who takes responsibility. Coaching!
Let's take a harder look at our personnel and start using them more effectively. Coaching!
Let's make defensive practice a priority on the field and in the meeting rooms. Coaching!
Let's take a closer look at our defensive coaching staff and make necessary changes to improve. Coaching!

Like most people, this current staff is afraid of change. No change will doom this team this season because what we currently are continuing to do, is not working. You can cut down on some of the penalties and execute a little better and see some improvement. That will not help our inefficiencies on defense which includes inadequate coaching. Guys no longer are buying in and body language is a tell-tell to that. Orakpo is a freak of nature & specimen who makes NO plays on this defense. He is NOT being used the proper way and it's sickening. Guys are continually never in position to make plays and when they seldom are, we dive at ankles, take poor angles and are just plain afraid to use their football instincts. Some one has to be responsible for such poor play every weekend and I say you start with the DC first and see what improvements the "next guy up" can create. Haslett has run his course and it's no longer effective. Time for a change imo.

i have defended haslett for a long time but the truth is this team HAS talented football players

our front 7 isnt playing up to its potential either by scheme or by technique

hall and wilson are simply through we have one potential guy at safety (rambo ) the rest cant be counted on

these guys lack discipline cant tackle and give up big plays routinely

Hey - nobody is going to confuse them with the 85 Bears but are you stating that you don't believe that this defense at least has enough talent to not give up record setting numbers just about every week?

So you believe that all of this is on the players & Haslett cannot coach them any better? You truly believe that someone like Orakpo has little to no talent & cannot be used better?

Whatever. Might as well print up more free passes for Jimmy since he quite possibly might be able to use them for the next 2-3 years - he is truly the Teflon man.

I am not going to make a case for Haslett to stay. The time to replace him was the off season.

Funny thing about a lot football fans is they are much like the villagers in the Frankenstein story. They want to storm the castle and kill the monster.

People forget that the team has played at 80% capacity of every other team in the league the past two years. People ignore the inept play of the QB this year. A pic, a funmble and a dropped pass were the biggest culprits in yesterdays game. At the same time the defense has been bad.

Fans always want to blame coaches but players are the ones who have to execute.

BTW I was listening to the radio when Cooley was talking about Orakpo and Cooley did not say the Redskins should play a 4-3 defense. What he said is Orakpo needs to be a down lineman. Kerrigan is fine in pass coverage for what he is asked to do.

My question after watching Haslett's defense for 4 years is why are there so many missed assignments. These guys have been playing football all of their lives, they should understand the concepts of the scheme.

Everyone that wants to storm the castle and lynch Haslett should take a good look and see that Griffin is a big part of the problem right now. $36 million penalty is another big problem. This staff has had to make due in a lot of cases because of that penalty.

if you make the case for Rak to play as a DE, then in essence, you're making the case to switch to a 4-3.
Right ?

healthy 3-4 looks like
Rak - Fletch - Reily - Kerrigan
Carriker - Cofield - Bowen

4-3 would look like ?
Jackson - Reily - Kerrigan
Rak - Carriker - Cofield - Bowen

Something like that Krush but I don't think Kerrigan can play OLB in a 4-3. He can handle the pass coverage as a 3-4 LB but not as an OLB in 4-3. I like Jackson a lot better where Orakpo is now but what do you do with Orakpo? Third down rushing specialist?

Just as this team was not built to be a 3-4 team when Haslett got here it's not built to be a 4-3 defense now without personnel changes.

I think the 3-4 is fine but the missed assignments and there are 2-4 glaring ones in each game and the poor tackling is killing the team. Then too they got 3 important stops in the 3rd quarter and the offense turned the ball over or dropped a TD pass. This team needs some guys to make plays other than Garcon and Kerrigan. Rambo has been so bad they went to three CBs and one safety.

Right now in a 4-3 it would look like this:
Jackson - Fletcher - Riley, Jr.
Orakpo - Cofield - Bowen - Kerrigan
