I always felt the big OOC games were played early so that a losing team could still recover in time for a decent bowl. A late season OOC loss by an SEC team would kill them in the rankings and drastically drop bowl bids
Bingo. You hit the nail on the head. Tne SEC's scheduling this weekend (outside of LSU/Ole Miss) is calculated to ensure the SEC teams maintain a strong Top 10 presence late season and keeps a couple teams in the NCG chase.

Remember last month Vandy cancelled it's early 2013 season OOC games with Northwestern and Ohio St due to "conference scheduling" issues. Who do you think Vandy will fill that late season open date with?
