Has Jimmy Graham passed Rob Gronkowski as the best TE in the league?

Absolutely. He's solid as a possession guy and Dallas doesn't have any weapons. But if money were no issue and you took witten over anyone mentioned in this thread (but Julius Thomas), you would be fired.

Let me spell this out for you: The rest of the Cowboys offense was struggling last season minus Dez. They couldn't run the ball. And Witten still catches 110 despite teams doubling him. And he's past his prime.

You guys just sound stupid. I'm sorry.

Did you honestly just say that Jason Witten was being doubled all last year? Did you even watch a Cowboys game? No one doubled him. He was used as nothing more than an extension of the running game, which is why with 110 catches, he barely broke 1000 yards receiving and only had 3 tds all year.

9.4 yards per catch isn't an elite tight end. if that is the case -- might as well throw brandon pettigrew in the mix too.

I'll use Gronk once again -- in 127 LESS games -- Witten only has 8 more touchdowns than Gronk for his career. Witten will end up in the HOF at the end of his career because of his longetivity of success with the Cowboys, but in one full season, Gronk put up numbers Witten has never seen and Jimmy is doing the same thing.

You could take Jason Witten top two career high seasons for TD's (9 and 7) and it doesn't add up to what Gronk did in a single year.

He had more targets than any tight end in the league, and played a different role than most. He is not a down the field threat, and players like graham and gronkowski were not needed to play roles underneath.

So says the guy who thinks Jason Witten was double teamed last year. Interesting.

There's too small of a sample to say much yet. Especially when Peyton's third receiver has made the pro bowl 5 years running.

As for witten, in his prime he still didn't compare.

Don't know about that, he was a favorite TE along with Gates and Gonzo for many years. Just because younger dudes came into the league does not hinder his greatness. The position has changed a bit where TEs become primary targets for QBs.

Per target:

Witten 7.06
Graham 7.27
Gronkowski 9.87

Both caught more touchdowns outright, as witten was not a red zone threat whatsoever.

Nice job misunderstanding what I said. He was doubled at times. Not all the time. So you're going to bring in yards per catch and TDs. Those are stats to determine who is a better vertical threat at TE. Not better overall. And again. The Cowboys struggled last year. You can't expect him to put up unbelievable numbers.

Good god you guys are just  Teams use different coverages. He was doubled at times. Depending on a defenses strengths, teams played him differently.

Because teams over compensated for him because nobody else on the Cowboys could step up in the red zone :L

No. Nobody gameplans around Witten. Every team in the league gameplans around gronkowski and graham.

Don't know why I'm even still replying. But how do you know that? Are you hanging out in team meeting rooms when they are forming a gameplan to play against the Cowboys? Seriously, who else is there to gameplan for besides Dez and Miles Austin? :noidea:

I'd still say Gonzalez has been the best TE in the league for awhile. To be fair I was saying this when he played in KC

If it's only because teams gameplan specifically for him this year, why has he never been a red zone threat?

I think we should just agree to disagree lol. All I wanted to say is right now Witten is the most balanced healthy TE. Well it could be Heath Miller too I guess. See, I like TEs that can block too. Gronk can, but he's not healthy. Graham is a liability as a blocker. I know TEs are becoming more and more like WRs, but you still want someone who can block well enough to run the ball effectively to their side.

I can say with certainty the only guy who faced double teams every game is Dez Bryant. NO TEAM is going to spend a double team on a TE used as an extension of the running game (see 9.4 ypc)

THAT is why Witten finished with 110 catches, because he was Romo's safety valve all year. Are you saying teams were doubling Jason Witten while he was running 5-6 yard routes, because that is what he did the overwhelming majority of the time?

Gronk isn't healthy... it makes more sense to have this discussion when both of them are actually on the field.

I like this argument much more than Witten. Gonzalez is sixth all time in receiving touchdowns. Second among tight ends is Antonio gates with 21 less.

Gonzales is still a force, and if you want to see a player get double teamed in the red zone, look no farther than the falcons last drive Sunday night.

his hands are not even close to gronk or graham.

Not even close?

Don't be a homer just for the sake of it. Whether you agree he is or isn't, Vernon Davis is certainly in the discussion.
