Having Coburn back and missing Schenn has made the Flyers take a step backwards in team defense?
Who would have thought.

Coburn is a good complimentary defenseman. He plays well off of a partner. If his partner is a skating positional player like Kimmo, he provides skating with size. If he is paired with a banger like Grossmann, he becomes a mobile physical player. Coburn is simply not a leader type player. He is not a player who sets the tone for his pairing.

Schenn...well for all of his shortcomings...is a physical first defensive defenseman.

I'm not sure that it has something to do with that

The issue the last two games is that they've taken too many penalties and are giving up too many power play goals - that has to stop - the Flyers are great 5 on 5 and they've gotten away from it the last two games because of penalties

It is quite evident that we sorely miss Schenn. The GGA is through the roof since he's been out and if you think it's the penalties we've taken he is sorely missed on the PK also. He's a space eater and solid at the back end. Schenn is underrated on this board and it's nice to see someone else notice.

Honestly I think these things are coincidence. The Flyers give up too many shots and have been hanging by a thread defensively (and have got some extremely good goaltending up til Saturday). I don't think it has that much to do with Coburn in the lineup or Schenn out of the lineup.

PK definitely needs work, I believe they're 2nd to last (next to the Devils) when it comes to penalty kill percentage.

Schenn and AMac both block a lot of shots especially on the PK. It certainly doesn't help that they're both out. Things could be worse if Coburn didn't come back he'll find his groove soon.

Well, I doubt Coburn is back to 100% yet.

I haven't looked too closely at the stats but I thought the defense was playing better when the minutes were being distributed more evenly when A Mac went out. I thought a few guys were playing a few too many minutes which was exposing the team. I think this happens when we have too many penalties. A few guys that are usually good on the PK are having to play more minutes. Schenn is solid for what he is, a 3rd pair dman. When Coburn came back and he went out things were shuffled and we are having problems again. MDZ has been playing better than I could have imagined but he is not a 23 minute/game player. I thing the minutes need to be evened out again.

I am becoming a Coburn skeptic. I'll give him time, but he has really dropped off since the lockout.

A good point was made earlier, with all the penalties getting taken, specific d-men get too many minutes + without A-Mac who blocks shots, that doesn't help matters either

Flyers have to get off to better starts in games too, the last two losses they gave up the first goal in each game, which doesn't help

When they've been winning, they've been scoring first - a lot of the reasons for their losses are pretty simple yet it seems like people are reaching for stupid reasons why they've lost

Start scoring first again, stay out of the damn box and use the 5 on 5 to your advantage because you are one of the top five teams in the league 5 on 5 this season

Luke Schenn is a -4 in 14 games, Braydon Coburn is a -2 in 4 games. If Coburn played 14 games he figure to be a -7, so the OP might have a point about the Flyers taking a step backwards substituting Coburn for Schenn. Still tho, small sample size so it's hard to say for sure.

yep, super small sample size on a pretty sketchy stat to begin with IMO. Plus/minus is nice to look at, but I don't put a huge amount of thought in to it. You can have the shift of your life, hit the post, and have the other team go down and score at the other end and get a minus for it.

True, especially when the Flyers' biggest weakness is killing penalties, where +- doesn't come into play.

Flyers penalty kill: The Philadelphia Flyers have been brutal when down a man, and their penalty-killing unit did not show any signs of improvement in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs scored on all three power-play attempts, leaving the Flyers' struggling special-teams unit 29th with a 71.2 percent success rate. What's worse? On the road, Philly is dead last on the PK with a dreadful 52.2 percent success rate.

Good info dude :suds:

I think they got talented dmen, but no defensive anchor. Luke Schenn sort of served that purpose and without him they're completely lacking in that role. I don't think it's on Coburn, he's really not that type of player. IDK, seems more of a personnel problem than anything else. Someone has gotta be that stopper.
