but 60% of the league does the same exact thing on ground balls straight back to the pitcher.

so that makes it acceptable? Of course today this is acceptable becuz our stars are too cool to hustle. Have you ever seen a pitcher throw that one away? I have and I've seen it many times but that doesn't matter becuz it's much cooler to stand on 1st instead of 2nd. Ya ever wonder why we don't see triples anymore in this game? No you haven't becuz you don't even know wtf a triple is. Everyone is too cool to run when they hit the ball and are more interested in looking cool joggin to 2nd instead of busting it and sliding into 3rd - who has time for that when you're so busy taking off your batting gloves and handing them to an adult who ran harder than you to 2nd just to get our fuckin gloves! Players today are a joke and Harper is just one of them.

It's not every day I get to say chicks dig the long ball in multiple threads but triples declined as home runs emerged. Teams build tiny fields and sign roided up sluggers to hit home runs so the people who paid big bucks for the seats that used to be where the field was can go home happy. The parks are smaller, the players are bigger, and the game is vastly different from the era of in the park home runs and triples.

Harper is playing through an injury and no matter how fast he ran he wouldn't have made it to first before the throw but he could have exacerbated that injury. There was just no point in him risking it to appease you're silly "in my day ..." notions on hustle. Bryce Harper is their franchise player. Matt Williams is the solid former player who is going to find himself out of a job real soon if he doesn't start to figure out what his roll is in this organization.

Not sure what major league player actually runs that out.

When you see a ground ball to the pitcher, 99% of the time you see the playwr run it out, not in this case.

Especially when Williams informed the team before to run out every play.

ahhh nothing like the truth to crush the Harper apologists
Is Bryce Harper?s act wearing thin with Nationals? | New York Post

What truth?

The NY Post references a WaPo question and answer session where a sportswriter speculates that no manager would have benched Harper without full support of the team. That's hardly proof of "Bryce Harper’s act wearing thin with Nationals". If it's proof of anything it's that tabloid newspapers will write sensational headlines with little meat in an article to back up those headlines but pretty much everyone in the universe but you already knew that.

Obviously, if he doesn't listen to Williams intentionally, then he doesn't care about the team just himself.

When the manager has a meeting and specifically says to do something, you listen to him. Bottomline.

If a player can't run to first bc of injury or lack of effort, he shouldn't be in the game. Fact.

Does that mean if someone tears something while running to first they're a "me first" player if they don't hobble down the baseline and touch first?

Harper is a hustler in general. In fact, many of his injuries are the result of refusing to give up on plays.

It would not surprise me if the front office told him to back off a bit in the interest of protecting their investment. And that's probably wise.

He's got an annoying personality, he's an immature kid, but hustle is the last problem someone should have with his game. This is an isolated incident, it doesn't define him. And it's wildly overblown.
