That's a good article. I definitely am in Mays'es corner. Mays is a good special teams player. The effort is there. I joked in a different thread that Mays should try yoga and I actually just read that he is doing yoga.
I do not think he should be our starting FS or SS this year. But a guy with his talent and speed and size should be on the team and we should be able to utilize his freakish abilities somehow on the team.
Cutting him would be a waste. Have him play special teams, maybe some backup SS and backup linebacker.
Don't give up the guy after 1 season and an extended lockout period.
Mays'es contract isn't even that expensive he's due $800K this year.
In comparsion the Jets hung onto Vernon Gholston through his rookie contract and that dude was taking them to the bank. But that's what they should have done because you never know maybe one year all of a sudden the player will "get it" and then the freakish physical talent will get put to good use.
Again, the knock on Mays is he lacks fluidity to change directions.
That play demonstrates he can run in a straight line with the best of them.
The cherry topper for me was reading he ADDED weight in the off-season. Good lord man talk about not having a clue.
For the record, I'm not a fan of Mays and was not happy when we drafted him. But I'm with Maniax here on the role he can fill on the team as a backup special team player with upside potential compared to a mediocre old vet (Madieu Williams, and Curtis Taylor).
You have to factor in his contract. If he was getting paid first round money, I'd say without a doubt cut him. But that's not the case.
I anticipate we'll have one final S spot between Mays, Williams Taylor and C. Jones (w/ Spillman making it as a S/T ace). My assumption is we'll keep five due to R. Smith's history of getting nicked, and the physical play of Goldson and Whitner.
All I'm trying to figure out is where exactly Mays is on the depth chart between M. Williams, Mays, Taylor, and Jones.
No it wasn't due to bad coaching and the lockout. It was his goal and he accomplished it with the help of.......yoga.
Boo! I hate this signing. I was happy to see goldson gone.
Here's my depth chart. I would keep 5 safeties.
Whitner, starting SS
Goldson, starting FS
Smith, is the first safety off the bench in case a starter gets hurt, he'll be ready in two weeks
Mays, put him in on special teams, and certain packages like 3rd and short, goal line situations, and keep pushing him in the classroom
final safety spot would be a battle between Taylor and Spillman not sure who would win here
Well we definitely had the cap room...I seriously wonder if they are thinking of switching back Reggie Smith to CB. The depth of the safeties we have is insane. Even if we trade Taylor Mays.
Reggie Smith could play corner if we needed him to, in case of injury.
