Also the guy was just horribly coached at USC and by Singletary. It's really a shame how he was coached.

That's a good article. I definitely am in Mays'es corner. Mays is a good special teams player. The effort is there. I joked in a different thread that Mays should try yoga and I actually just read that he is doing yoga. :-)

I do not think he should be our starting FS or SS this year. But a guy with his talent and speed and size should be on the team and we should be able to utilize his freakish abilities somehow on the team.

Cutting him would be a waste. Have him play special teams, maybe some backup SS and backup linebacker.

Don't give up the guy after 1 season and an extended lockout period.

Mays'es contract isn't even that expensive he's due $800K this year.
In comparsion the Jets hung onto Vernon Gholston through his rookie contract and that dude was taking them to the bank. But that's what they should have done because you never know maybe one year all of a sudden the player will "get it" and then the freakish physical talent will get put to good use.

Fair enough. Solider on!

That is a third and short run play. That's not the kind of play he has a problem with. HE HAS PISS POOR COVERAGE ABILITY. He's got tight hips, no instincts, and straight line speed. This kind of thing gets sorted out early on in college. Not the pros.

Again, the knock on Mays is he lacks fluidity to change directions.

That play demonstrates he can run in a straight line with the best of them.

All I'm saying is I think it's the right decision to keep Mays on the roster and have him backup Whitner at SS for a couple years. Have him play special teams and also close to the line of scrimmage. Maybe he's a good safety to have in there for goal line situations where the downfield space is limited.

Coach him properly how to read plays, how to properly tackle instead of going for the big hit, keep working on that yoga it should help a bit, and maybe in two years you can have yourself a great SS.

I would keep 5 safeties again:

Whitner, Goldson, Smith, Mays, and Spillman or Taylor not sure which one.

If Smith ends up on IR then keep Spillman and Taylor.

Again, due to bad coaching and the lockout.

But the kid has great work ethic and is willing to work hard on anything you tell him to work on. In my mind he should definitely be on the 54 man roster.

No it wasn't due to bad coaching and the lockout. It was his goal and he accomplished it with the help of.......yoga.

For the record, I'm not a fan of Mays and was not happy when we drafted him. But I'm with Maniax here on the role he can fill on the team as a backup special team player with upside potential compared to a mediocre old vet (Madieu Williams, and Curtis Taylor).

You have to factor in his contract. If he was getting paid first round money, I'd say without a doubt cut him. But that's not the case.

I anticipate we'll have one final S spot between Mays, Williams Taylor and C. Jones (w/ Spillman making it as a S/T ace). My assumption is we'll keep five due to R. Smith's history of getting nicked, and the physical play of Goldson and Whitner.

All I'm trying to figure out is where exactly Mays is on the depth chart between M. Williams, Mays, Taylor, and Jones.

Curtis Taylor is just in his 3rd year. I think "old" is not an accurate description

Yeah, that's right. For some reason I thought he was a few years older than that. I just looked it up and he's only 26 (my bad). He's been on the roster for two years also, so I don't think he's got any PS eligiblity.

The competition for that final spot will be good!

If everything's relatively even C. Jones is on the PS. So now we're down to three.

-Curtis Taylor is solid, but he doesn't have a lot of upside. Can't underestimate having a solid guy back there who can step in and not kill you

-Mays has upside and doesn't have any work ethic issues. The big liability in coverage can't be underestimated though. Again, can't underestimate a guy who will step in and kill you.

-Williams is the vet who can provide some stability. But with both Whitner and Goldson signed, I'd think Williams is the most expendable and needs to clearly outplay the others to win the job.

So it may come down to S/T contribution between C. Taylor vs. Mays unless they really want some stability in a vet back-up, or if Mays is beyond help.

Here's my depth chart. I would keep 5 safeties.

Whitner, starting SS

Goldson, starting FS

Smith, is the first safety off the bench in case a starter gets hurt, he'll be ready in two weeks

Mays, put him in on special teams, and certain packages like 3rd and short, goal line situations, and keep pushing him in the classroom

final safety spot would be a battle between Taylor and Spillman not sure who would win here

I like the signing. Goldson and Reggie Smith and CJ Spillman now are both on 1 year cheap deals and next offseason the 49ers will have a choice as to which one they want to resign. It's great!

I was just thinking about Spillman. He's not only competing with the safeties, but also against the new LB ST ace. We're likely only keeping one dedicated ST's player in that mold.

That being said, Spillman was very good in ST's last year. Good enough for me right now to slot him ahead of Taylor Mays if one had to go. That right there will be a tough decision if they can't swing a trade.

If it is assumed that T. Mays can't cover and won't be able to cover in the future, keeping him as a decent S/T's player, and a short yardage safety specialist would be ridiculous. But then again if he'll be a S/T's ace, then you give him the nod.

The special teamer that makes it through will be one tough hombre.

Well we definitely had the cap room...I seriously wonder if they are thinking of switching back Reggie Smith to CB. The depth of the safeties we have is insane. Even if we trade Taylor Mays.

Reggie Smith could play corner if we needed him to, in case of injury.

That's what I'm thinking as well. I would much rather have him as a safety, but we may need him if Brown, Spencer, or Rogers gets hurt.

I was suprised to see Goldson signed. I figured he was as good as gone. As for Safety Depth I would hope the Niners explore every avenue to trade Mays for some kind of pick. Mays has a good work ethic and he trys but sometimes thats just not enough. Mays was a 4th or 5th round talent elevated to second round because of playing for a big nationally televised school.
