If I'm not mistaken the comp criteria should be based off of his performance from this year? The entire comp pick smoke and mirrors is a mess anyway.
We traded him. He was not lost by free agency. If we had kept him, we could have gotten a comp pick.
Regardless of his past, losing a 31 yo that did not play all year would not likely qualify us for comp pick.

If he plays well for Carolina and then gets signed for big money elsewhere, Carolina will potentially be eligble for losing him to free agency.

Bill is re-shuffling the deck and has something up his sleeve, for sure. That is his trademark, not that that is a bad thing.

Some interesting facts about how and why things went the way they did.

According to Mike Giardi, Gilmore's September medical report stated that there was nothing at all wrong with his quad. It was healed and he was cleared to start plying football.

When BB got the report he contacted Gilmore and asked him if he'd be willing to restructure his contract and help the team create some cap space. Gilmore said he would if he got his 3 year mega extension. That's when he started saying he wanted to stay in NE. There are no factual reports on what he asked Bill to provide for 22. 23 and 24 but it was big enough that BB couldn't take a bite of that apple.

Gilmore then supposedly stated, "If you can't help me out, I can't help you."

That set the trade talks in motion and of course players talk to other players and they talk to their coaches and GMs. Gilmore's trade value fell lower than whale shit across the league. And you know that friends of BB must have called him and told him that everyone knew what was happening.

The Bucs and Packers made the mistake of saying that they'd just wait until he was officially a free agent before making a move. Bill call Carolina who knew that they were getting a player for less than one full season and offered a 6th round pick in 2023. That is supposedly the best offer that had been made.

Gilmore's gone and every armchair GM is saying that BB screwed himself again because he didn't trade Gilmore back before or during the 2021 draft process. Of course, what everyone forgets is that Gilmore had just had quad surgery and not one football expert was sure that he'd even be able to play football in 2021 and supposedly the best offer that Bill received was a 4th round pick from the Cardinals, that's never been confirmed.

Gilmore has not played or practiced NFL level professional football since late November of 2020. He's medically cleared to start but few of us remember that Stephon Gilmore was not the same player in 2020 that he was in 2019. He was actually pretty bad until his injury Thanksgiving week. The other thing to remember is that the Patriots did him a huge favor and forwarded his 2021 salary to 2020 and gave him a base of $21M in 2020 and he fully accepted it. Then he didn't put forth the effort or couldn't put forth the effort he did in 2019 to win the DPY award.

Gilmore made it known that he's in it for the money now. Come February when he's a free agent, he will go where he can get the biggest payday until 2024. That's only if he plays for the Panthers for his remaining $7M in 2021. If he doesn't, how many teams will be willing to step forward and offer him 3 years at even $45M after not playing for nearly 2 years? If he doesn't play, he'll be making $400,000 a week for the remainder of 2021 to sit home and fake an injury. Or to be an ass hoping that some idiot will give him 3 years and $60M through 2024.

Yardbarker reports this morning that the Packers were really in on Trading for Gilmore and the return for the Patriots would have been much better. The problem was that the Packers only have $7M space and Gilmore's $5.8M would have pressed them against the cap. The biggest problem was that Gilmore would sit out without an extension or a guarantee of one. The Panthers came in cheap and were will to pay a huge contract extension and the pieces fell in place.

The Bucs were also interested but didn't want the extension or have to move someone to fit Gilmore.

The Saints inquired but Peyton said that he was not going to pay a 31 year old CB with injury history a monster contract the he might have to eat if Gilmore wasn't able to play a full contract.

Gilmore got his leverage and now the Panthers are on the hook for a guaranteed extension that will be around 3 years and $54M with $40M guaranteed. The only dirt will be if Gilmore gets hurt during the time he plays in 2021. Remember, he hasn't played or participated in any football activity since Nov. 29, 2020.

They don't have to extend him. He can finish out his contract on a rental for a team that is playing well.

The thing is that Gilmore said that if he wasn't given or promised a new contract by his new team, he would sit out 2021. Panthers are going to give him a new contract, and they've already said that. That's why the Saints and Packers walked away.

After acquiring former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore from the Patriots, Panthers GM Scott Fitterer said the team would not immediately extend their acquisition. However, that doesn’t mean the doesn’t intend to eventually sign their acquisition. Per Jeff Howe and Joseph Person of The Athletic, “the Panthers’ intention is to sign Gilmore to a contract extension.”

[RELATED: Gilmore Extension Not Yet In Panthers’ Plans]

The organization understands that they’ll have to pay up if they hope to keep Gilmore in Carolina for the long haul. Before they make that pricey investment, the team wants to see what Gilmore looks like on the field. The star cornerback missed five games last year and is guaranteed to miss the first six this season due to a quadriceps injury he sustained late in 2020. The team sounds optimistic that Gilmore will return once his six-week stint on the PUP comes to an end, but the front office is still being fiscally responsible before handing out an extension.

Per Howe and Person, Gilmore’s contract issues with the Patriots apparently won’t travel to Carolina. The cornerback “will report to the Panthers and won’t demand a new contract before suiting up.” The veteran also wants to assure that “the defensive fit is as strong as it appears on paper” before committing long-term to the organization.

Still think they should have traded him last season when he would have gotten at least a 2nd rounder and hell maybe even a player

Can't cry over spilt milk.

99% of us were more than willing to get rid of him back in April. BB wasn't.

Fact: BB offered Gilmore an incentive laden addition to his contract for 2021 if he'd negotiate a long term contract that was reasonable. No word on what 'reasonable' was. The incentives, if all were met could have pushed his 2021 salary to $22M and he refused it. 6th round pick doesn't seem to be much, but maybe it will give the Patriots another TB12 type of player.

BB wasn't but it has cost them with this defense it appears....

We shall see if BB was right or not

Gilmore is off the PUP. He did not play week 7.
As I understand it he now has 2 more games before they lose him for the year.
Ready for week 8? I think that is doubtful. Week 9 is the Patriots.
Could N'keal Harry be useful for bumping around with Gilmore?

I absolutely have to believe that N'Keal is off the team any day now.

It's over. He's gone. Forget him. The guy was useless to the Patriots. He wanted big bucks and wasn't gonna get it here.

As far as I'm concerned, he's a useless piece of shit.

The Patriots bent over in 2020 and gave him an advance on his 2021 salary that put him at the very top of CB pay. He knew he would be getting $7M in 2021. Then he complains about not being paid fairly. FUCK HIM!!!!!!! I hope his quad gets ripped off his body and it can't be surgically repaired.

Screw anyone who doesn't like what I have to say about him.

He did help bring us a Super Bowl, so thanks for that.
