Nate could also re-sign with the Phillies. I think it depends if anybody *does* offer him a (chance at a) starting job. The Phillies didn't want to give him a raise from the $1.3M he earned last year (which he likely would have gotten in arb), but that doesn't mean they wouldn't want him back at $750K.

And they could dangle the "earn the starting job" in front of him (all of last seasons starting OFs are gone, and neither Domonic Brown nor Laynce Bix seem much better than Nate).

From MLBTraderumors.com

Nate Schierholtz received calls from nine teams within the first 12 hours of being non-tendered.

1) I would hope so - and I would have expected more. Any team that doesn't sniff the tires or kick the coffee on recently released players who don't suck is not doing their job (unless there is not even the slightest need in that position). I would expect the teams to have asked "what's he looking for" and then say "Keep us in mind; we might be in touch later, depending". Click.

2) I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was Nate's agent that leaked that tidbit about the 9 teams. Bargaining/positioning.

Does this come from your experience as a player? Or GM?

Wtf?

He posed very legit scenarios and you reply like a doosh?

So Marco would have expected more teams to inquire about Nate in his first 12 hours of free agency. But then in the next paragraph he "wouldn't be surprised" that it was Nate's agent who "planted" this news. (uh, Really? Isn't that the most likely source?)

The obvious conclusion here is that Nate's agent is an idiot to not know that nine teams is a paltry number, and, as such, he is doing serious damage to the perception of his client's market demand. I'm also sure Buster Olney tweeted this only because of the laughably small number of teams that inquired in the first 12 hours of Nate's free agency. I mean, why else would this news deserve a tweet?

I don't know about you Cal, maybe it was the insights on the likely content of team/agent communication more than Marco trying to "argue" knowledge of how many teams call a league average free agent in the first 12 hours after they hit the open market, but something about that post pegged my bullshit meter.

It is a fact that none of us know shit.

Therefore, by that logic, none of us are allowed to ever post.

Would he have been satisfied if it was 12 teams inquiring? 15? That's the funny shit for me. What number would have been satisfactory to stop such a blanket statement from being made? Oh, the intrigue!

Agreed with the bolded, as for the middle line, well I agree with that too (strictly in my case), but I'll keep posting anyway. :heh:

Come on brotha, it seemd like a pretty harmless post. I don't think Marco said anything that was out of line. Probably something similar to a what a lot of our boards denizens would have posted, he just doesn't have the long history with us to fall back on.

BTW, I thought I'd recognize you here (just in case some of our folks don't read the 49er board), but I commend you for your beatdown last week on "he" who shall not be named. :heh:

I just read on MLBtraderumors.com that Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Giants are close to re-signing Pagan. That would be great. I thought he was for sure gone. We need him. Bourn's price is probably too high, and guys like Victorino are unsatisfactory.

KNBR is reporting it as well. I can't say I'm bummed, I was starting to think that (were I the Giants FO) I would probably bite the bullet and pay him $36M for 3 years, so I can't be that upset for a 4th year at $4M (in my hypothetical). At the very least, this lets Gary Brown develop at the right speed and Pagan can always become a LF'er if Gary Brown progresses like we hope he will. I think Pagan's skill set matches our park nicely and he seemed to be good in the clubhouse. Now don't become Aangel Rowgan. :heh:

$7mm for 2013. I guess that explains the non-tender.

How does that work tz? If they had tendered him, he'd at least have to make the $12-$13M he would have been slated to make? Also, the signing bonus gets him close to that "would have been" number right?

Sorry, I know you, gp and Marco (and others I'm sure that I'm forgetting) all explain this stuff all the time, I'm just lazy and you 3 are smarter than me. :)

I would guess (purely from my assal region) that there was a gentlemanly agreement that Oxy would test the market and once he found a deal he liked, the giants would have the right the make a counter offer with a home-team discount factored in. The home-town discount was purchased with the non-QO.

The QO means he would paid the average of the top 125 (?) players in the bigs for 1 year if he accepted. That would assure that the Giants get compensation if he signed elsewhere, and the signing team would lose their first pick.

The loss of the pick for the signing team would theoretically drop his market value, so it would cost him money.
