While a good point (Posey's potential desire to play for the Braves), don't you think Bonds would have more inclined to stay in Pittsburgh if those teams won him a ring or two? Über success tends to breed happiness.

Who knows with Bonds. The Giants drafted him out of Serra and he (mostly his Dad) fucked around with the Giants in negotiations when he had no intention of signing with them.

Those ASU honeys weren't gonna fuck themselves!... or were they?

At the risk of being a HF.....you two feckwads know what a hypothetical is right??? :heh:

Just in case, I'm a size 7 and 1/4 :dunce:

So hypotheticals are not allowed to spawn discussions?

Isn't that kinda the point of hypotheticals?

It is a hypothetical that deserves consideration. We have been talking about timmeh going to the M's for years, yet I do not think he has ever said anything about wanting to go back to Seattle.

The same concerns need to be made about any player who has a strong identification with a particular region/team.

Fixed it for you.

Nope. The truth is Bonds had no intention of signing with the Giants, and Bobby was going to keep upping the required signing bonus by another 5K no matter what they offered. Although, I'm sure there would have been a number at which he might have signed. Don't we all have such a number?

You're retelling a story that was a widely believed, but still incorrect. Even at that, the old story has the difference at $5,000, with the kicker that Frank Robinson offered to pay the difference out of his own pocket. No matter the details, it's still a mis-characterization of what occurred.

Did you have a comfy chair at the Bonds family dinners where they discussed this?

All things considered, it doesn't seem that either side has the best track record of telling the truth (especially during perjury trials).

Either side? You mean Barry Bonds on one side, but who/what is on the other? That aside, do you have a reason to doubt Bobby Bonds?

The Giants organization with their gaggle of sports journalists. I believe professional sports front offices attempt to create whatever reality best serves their needs. In the court of public opinion, that would be making sure they're not blamed for missing out on signing the unbelievably talented hometown kid.

As far as Bobby Bonds, there isn't the documented lying that Barry has, but these things don't exactly occur in a vacuum. Basically, I think the truth is likely somewhere in the middle, and I don't understand what would be so bad about a kid wanting to go to college for a few years. Bobby could have just said that. Both sides chose to make the discussion about money.

Perhaps I'm confused about what you were stating originally..... but you understand it was Barry/Bobby correcting the old rumors, and thereby letting the Giants off the hook for how they handled the 1982 negotiations?

There really isn't "the other side". You had the Bonds' who allowed a disparaging rumor to circulate for years, and Bob Lurie's Giants who certainly had no reason to propagate a rumor that made them look ridiculously cheap. Seems like they would be on the same side of getting the story right.

And allow me a pet peeve over "the truth is likely somewhere in the middle", if you've ever had dealings with a sociopath, or had a flat-out crank question your research, you know the truth is not always, of even usually, "somewhere in the middle," in the usual image evoked by the phrase, i.e. close to equidistant between two points.

In this case, the middle would be somewhere between, "he was never going to sign" and "he would've signed for an ungodly amount of money"/"the Bonds family is fucking with us." I agree that he had to have a number where he would sign, and I think the Lurie's Giants were floating "the Bonds family is crazy" stories, which obviously weren't completely false. They were manipulating the situation, knowing exactly what Barry actually wanted, but that is just smart negotiating.

Middle to me is anywhere between the two extremes. It can be more toward one side or the other, and still be in the middle, thus "somewhere in the middle." It isn't meant to irritate you, but neither is picking my nose. :)

I don't know where you're getting this. It was Bobby Bonds who admitted he was "fucking around" with the Giants, and it was Barry who said he was set to go to ASU. It was never reported that Barry or his dad were fucking with the Giants, the "reports" , such as they were, which were little more than rumors, were always critical of the Giants - never of Barry/Bobby. There were never "the Bonds family is crazy" stories - ever.

I got the impression those were the rumors that were floated based on Marco's interpretation vs. your own. Also, that is exactly how a front office would respond today. Simpler times those '80s (at least as far as the 24-hour news cycle).

No. My interpretation, which casts themselves somewhat negatively, came from Bobby and Barry. Marco's, which casts the Giants as cheapskates/idiots, was a rumor floating around for years. There isn't anyone alive today who would assert the old rumor is true.

My pet peeve is justified again.
