2022 Giants starting pitcher stats and MLB ranks:
fWAR - 17.2 (3rd)
ERA - .368 (7th)
FIP - 3.10 (1st)
K/9 - 9.06 (5th)
SO/W - 3.94 (4th)
HR/9 - 0.77 (1st)
GB rate - 49.1% (1st)

Pretty much by every number, they were a top 5 rotation in baseball. And, it feels like a letdown that the rest of the roster wasn't enough to push them into the playoffs but teams with good rotations tend to be tough to beat in the postseason.

Defensive rating 2021 --> 2022

Outs above average +28 --> -31
Defensive runs saved +32 --> -52
Ultimate zone rating +0.8 --> -27.4

Of all the things that went wrong for the Giants in 2022, their defensive collapse may be the toughest to explain.

And that was completely visible as well. Nothing makes a game more unwatchable than little league defense.

Dang, I'm surprised that a .368 ERA was only 7th.

On a serious note, how about the bullpen? It did get better toward the end but it sure looked rough for a good stretch of the season.

Offhandedly, I'd blame the bullpen meltdown on the loss of Posey and the defensive letdown on age. When you carry a bunch of mid 30 somethings, things can do south fast.

If you subscribe to the Athletic, this is a very nice article on Reggie Crawford:

Bottom line -- he's an elite talent who hits absolute bombs, plays a solid 1b, and throws 101 mph. Could be the next Shoei. I'm super excited about this kid.
I don’t subscribe. Therefore it is a bad article.

I know I've already talked up how the injury narrative for the 2022 season was so disappointing is false but I stumbled across spotrac (have heard of it in passing but don't remember looking at it before) and found a way to sort injuries by length on IL. You can see the information here - MLB 2022 Injured List Tracker
A total of 31 players spent 1,462 days on the IL. However, if you sort it by most to least amount of days on the IL, you'll see the top 2 are Matt Boyd (151 days) and Sam Delaplane (107 days). Neither were counted on in any way to repeat 2021. Go down to 6th and you'll find Trevor Rosenthal (77 days). If you remove from this list all players who were not on the active roster when placed on the IL, the total number of players goes down to 25 players and 996 days. Then there are the guys who weren't that good when healthy (i.e. LaStella, Belt, DeSclafani, Wade, etc) and the number goes down further to 17 players and 427 days.
Here is what I don't know - how that compares to other teams once they factor out non active roster players and poorly performing players on their ILs. But what I do know is that the Giants, overall, were 5th most in terms of number of players on the IL but were 13th most in terms of number of total days on the IL. Teams such as the Rays, Dodgers, Yankees and Phillies had higher number of days on the IL than the Giants.

Great thought process, but regarding guys like Belt, La Stella, etc, it COULD be argued that they sucked on the field BECAUSE of injuries. So removing them from this list goes against the spirit of the list, imho. Guys like Delaplane, Rosenthal and Boyd, however, are appropriate to be left off.

Fair enough but that brings up the question of whether or not the injury occurred immediately prior to the placement on the IL or if it was lingering for a bit before the IL placement. That would take more information than I can access to answer.

The 4 you mentioned specifically, I think we’re dealing with injuries pretty much from day 1.

Several Giants pitching prospects have had a nice showing in the AFL:
Spencer Bivens: 0.96 ERA, 11 strikeouts, 4 walks, 5 hits
Tyler Myrick: 0.90 ERA, 9 strikeouts, 2 walks, 4 hits
Hunter Dula: 3.52 ERA, 7 strikeouts, 5 walks, 7 hits
Carson Whisenhunt: 5 strikeouts, 2 IP

Will Bednar gave up 6 earned runs in 3.1 innings before dealing with back tightness.

Keep in mind that Bivens is about 4 years older than most players in that league.

With the way Doval is progressing, Diaz' new deal with the Mets may show what he'll start negotiations with in 5 years. It would be nice if the Giants could sign him to a team friendly deal now that covers his arb eligible years and one or two years of free agency. That would mean paying him more now than what they would have to pay pre-arb guys.

I should mention that this is something the FO will want to think about, IMHO, next offseason. If Doval gets even better in 2023, he will be looking better good as a guy going into his last offseason before arbitration begins in 2024. Striking a long term deal, paying him more up front but, hopefully, a bit less than what he'd get in free agency for a year or two (if even as 1 or 2 year team options) would seem smart.

That Donovan Walton trade is really reaping benefits for the Giants so far . . .

Meanwhile, the Cubs are getting a little snake bit on the Bryant trade . . .

Ouch. That sounds career threatening. Reminds me kinda of the Cabrera injury. Let’s hope this doesn’t end the same way.

Still shocking to see how tragic the Cabrera story ended up.

Kinda a 'Giant's General Thought'

Watched the HBO Willie Mays documentary "Say Hey, Willie Mays!".

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Old video of Willie in NY, Seals Stadium, the opening of Candlestick. Candid off field stuff (including daily stickball in Harlem with neighborhood kids). Interviews with Orlando, Juan, Reggie Jackson, Tito Fuentes, and Barry of course. Jon Miller and Vin Scully reflect on his career. Some video of Willie's highlights, appearances on Ed Sullivan, cameo's on Donna Reed and Bewitched (?wtf).... very good soundtrack
