I believe Jacob Heyward was the last player drafted by the Giants in 2016 to still be with the organization. A total of 2 players reached the majors with the Giants. On a different note, Bryan Reynolds (2nd round, 2016) has turned into a star with the Pirates.

Many players from the '17 draft class will be eligible to become free agents next winter. As far as I can tell, only 4 of the 10 top picks remain with the organization.

Kinda a 'Giant's General Thought'

Watched the HBO Willie Mays documentary "Say Hey, Willie Mays!".

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Old video of Willie in NY, Seals Stadium, the opening of Candlestick. Candid off field stuff (including daily stickball in Harlem with neighborhood kids). Interviews with Orlando, Juan, Reggie Jackson, Tito Fuentes, and Barry of course. Jon Miller and Vin Scully reflect on his career. Some video of Willie's highlights, appearances on Ed Sullivan, cameo's on Donna Reed and Bewitched (?wtf).... very good soundtrack

Recommended
Watching it now.

I have been a Giants fan since ‘86 or so. So obviously, I know what Willie looks like. But watching this, I saw something I never noticed before.

Willie and Charles Barkley are doppelgängers. How is it I never noticed that before?

Correct on 2016. Pat Ruotolo was only other pick from 2016 in the org at the start of the 2022 season but he was released about midway through.

There are actually 9 players left from 2017: Heliot Ramos (1st), Seth Corry (3rd), Bryce Johnson (6th), John Gavin (8th), John Russell (16th), Frankie Tostado (19th), Shane Matheny (23rd), Connor Nurse (34th), Joey Marciano (36th)

File under "Stats that completely pass the smell test" --

Singles with a runner on 2b, the Giants were the WORST TEAM IN THE NL IN 2022 at scoring the run

42% of the time the runner was held at 3b
56% of the time the runner scored

League average: 35% and 61%

We've got to get quicker.

Don't worry - we kept Pederson. That should help.

Giants prospects Casey Schmitt and Patrick Bailey were each awarded Rawlings’ Gold Glove Awards for minor league baseball. Schmitt, who ended year in Triple A might arguably be the best position player prospect in the system at this point. Certainly he’s the closest of top group

It doesn’t sound as if Shelby Miller will be back with the Giants - they offered him a minor league deal but he has two big-league deals on the table so far from other teams. He looked like he can contribute at the big-league level; that’s an area the Giants could use help.

Giants starters in 2022: 0.77 HR/9 (1st in MLB)
Giants relievers in 2022: 0.90 HR/9 (11th in MLB)
Yep.

Giants starters in 2022: 3.68 ERA (7th in MLB)
Giants relievers in 2022: 4.08 ERA (20th in MLB)

Of the common threads in the WC years, it was FYWW that perhaps stood out the most. We have to upgrade.

Why?

He literally has next to nothing left in the tank... Just so he can retire with us...?

I'm not opposed to that but still...
In other threads, I've thrown out the suggestion that we bring him back, but ONLY if he agrees to be the closer, and NOT as a starter.

He's got plenty "left in the tank" for that, I'm sure. And he certainly has the mentality for it.

That would get The Park rocking again.

While I think your idea has some merit, it is really dependent on whether he'd want to be a closer. If not, he would NOT have the mentality and it would be an awful experiment. The man seems to be as stubborn as a mule and if he thinks he wants to be a starter for the duration of his career, then he won't be a very good closer.

Agreed. Bum would have to WANT to be the closer. I've stated that before (see 2 posts above, #377). I don't think anyone could MAKE him do something, ever.

To your point, it could also well be that he feels, understandably, that he has accomplished all he cares to accomplish in MLB, doesn't really care to accomplish more, and now is just getting paid (a lot).

And, I think, because his rights are controlled by another team, there is no way that the Giants could talk him into moving to a closer role before acquiring him. Making the trade, and finding out that he won't budge, seems foolish. Right now, he is, at best, a 5th starter. The Giants don't need a 5th starter.

It surprises me how much his production has dropped. It almost seems like he is just going through the motions and isn't very motivated to do well. However, I don't really know what is going on. Its too bad that so many of the guys from the starting rotations of the championship squads flamed out so quickly.
