This is the pirates... not likely to happen... MLB and ESPN want the Washington franchise to succeed...Big tv media market... So yeah they will get hype when a young phenom comes up... Not the same ball of wax in Pittsburgh.

Oh yeah that was sarcasm on my part....Anyway there is not way ESPN would touch them but MLB might do a live look in at his first pitch.

Who knows but his numbers looks pretty good in AAA right now.
I think with him being upset not making the team out of ST he might be hyped up and pitch a good game.
The shame of it is the Nat's could control Strasburg's 1st start to face a weak Pirate team. Cole has to face the Giants who are pretty middle of the road offensively but have a pretty good team BA.

I was sort of waiting for the kid to start striking out more batters and walk a few less... Everything else was fine for him in AAA so far this season.

Only striking out 6.22 batters per 9 innings pitched worries me... and I would like to see a much better K:BB ratio than 2:1 in the minors for someone who is supposed to be a legit front line starter.

I think he had a little more to prove down on the farm.

I am not sure he will be up for more than one start, here is my reasoning.

1. They need to create a 40 man roster spot for him which isn't much of a problem.....see John McDonald/Jordy Mercer.

2. Once he is done with his game, they will need to create a spot on the 40 man for Morton, this is much more difficult unless they have a candidate to go on the 60 day dl.

3. After that, wandy should be ready to return, so the need for a fifth starter is eliminated, since we would have 5.

4. I don't think NH feels like Cole is truely ready either and would like to get him some more innings at Indy.

Tuesday will be a very important day in Pirates history. Whether or not they win or lose I don't see being as all that relevant. Of course, it would be nice to see Cole dominate and get the win against the defending champs, but this young fella encapsulates what could end up being a very prosperous future that we have all been waiting far too long to see. He is what I presume as being our first homegrown ace since Benson. If this guy truly is the real deal, he could be the final piece in the puzzle that breaks this streak, and possibly more...

Here's to the future, Bucco fans :suds:

Hi guys. Anybody, at all, worried about the service time issue? I would feel better about this move if it was like the 3rd week of June or later.

Are the Pirates still assured of the extra yr of team control on Cole, by bringing him up this soon?

I know that this idea is not great reasoning in developing a players career path. However, it is an aspect of things all small market teams must take in to account.

Burgh

PS Which members on our site, have tickets to see Cole pitch in his first game tomorrow night?

It might not be an issue if he's only coming up for this one game. I don't think he even makes this start if we don't have so many injuries, to be honest.

We are well past the point where we gain the extra year of control. The only issue now is wether or not he is eligible for super 2 status. The cutoff for that should be 2.119 or there abouts. If Cole stays with the Pirates through the end of the season he would accumulate 2.111 years, so shouldn't be an issue, assuming the cutoff is in fact 2.119.

They just made the 40-man roster move.

Traded John McDonald to the indians for $$$ or a ptbnl.

Cant believe they got rid of his contract, much less getting a scrub or some cash to boot.

I think it's great that he's finally ready for ML duty at exactly the same time that he's past the cutoff for super 2 status. Perfect timing. Almost as if it was planned this way.

The bright side - he's going to get a better defense behind him and he'll get to learn from Searage and Burnett.
That said - I expect him to get bombed tomorrow. It seems to be a pattern with him. Get too excited, overthrow, fastball flattens out and gets too high in the zone.

i agree.
once he gets some tutelage and realizes he is here to stay, he will calm down and we will see do we have great raw skills but a guy who is a #3 or do we really have a guy who will be an ace for years to come.

Pirates fans have every reason to be very excited about this guy. Does he have any breaking stuff, though?

I saw one breaking ball, forget against who but it looked good. I wondered if they wanted him to keep bringing the heat?

Seeing it consistently at 97/98 and that one at 99 why not I guess? Getting to those speeds looked easy to him.
