Side note...

Let's try to play this with an honor agreement NOT to look these up. Only the person asking the question can do research...

Yeah, I forgot to put that into the initial post. Agreed.

My next guess is Bagwell, but he definitely has more homers than 309 and I don't think he played anywhere but 1st.

Ah. Wasnt sure if he actually got a SS as a 3B...

That was the one that I thought would throw people a bit...people equate him to DH without realizing he came up as a 3B. I thought the multiple positions getting a SS would throw people off the scent....good shit.

I will be SHOCKED if anyone gets this one as-is. I will HAVE to add clues, I am sure...

He played primarily catcher.
He did sign with the Giants when he was drafted. This is not a trick tid-bit.

Unrelated, but there is a discussion about greatest players at each position that is winding down on the MLB general board.

The discussion has been going on all winter, and this week has been the final matchups.

Rodriguez vs Bench
Foxx vs Gehrig
Hornsby vs Collins
Wagner vs Rodriguez
Schmidt vs Mathews
Bonds vs Williams
Mays vs Cobb
Ruth vs Aaron

Heated convo in the Bonds v Williams thread...

Of course!

It's weird how a guy who indeed probably won't make the HOF is so easily identified just by his first name. That's usually for superstars.

Just because so many minor league fans talk about him.

I hardly noticed him when he was active.

He never played for the Pirates.

(neither did Kuiper or Kelly)
He shared a baseball card with Mark McGwire in the 1988 Score set.
