Not sure if this was said but I just read that the Niners were finalists for Hester. I would have loved to see him come here.

It would be tough to get over my hopes of seeing Dri Archer returning kicks next year, but at least Hester would be a huge upgrade.

I also agree I would rather have Dri Archer. I thought James looked fast in college but he just doesn't have the speed to get away. If we got Archer our punt/return game would start to scare teams again. Look at this kickoff return he has 40 seconds into the video.

I know there are quality of competition issues and I know he's small and I know I've only seen his highlight reel but is there any way that this guy might be worth, say, a second rounder? I'm not sure that an athlete like that will still be available in the 4th (although Sproles was I guess). Given our abundance of picks I would be totally fine with spending a second or third rounder on a good return specialist who could do some damage on reverses and stuff on offense as well. I think he might be able to add something to our team that we've never really had in recent years (with the possible exception of maybe Ginn).

He is projected to be a mid-late round draft pick. At the earliest I would draft him in the late 3rd or 4th round if the draft was going our way so far. If we use him right he could be just like Sproles if not better. I would love to see our team run screen passes for him and reverses.

Sproles has 13 pounds on this guy and is 2 inches shorter. Archer isn't thick enough to run as much as Sproles did.

I'm thinking more along the lines of Dexter McCluster on offense. Maybe a little better. But I see Archer as the best option to return kicks, which is why I'd want him in SF.

Since the Niners clearly aren't in win-right-now-at-all-costs mode, I think it's time to shift back into long-term building mode again.

With that said, my new #1 target I want in FA is Marc Sanchez. Get him Harbs! I'd love to see what the Sanchize could do after Harbaugh sinks his claws into him.

Gabbert's not exactly a guarantee to make the team.

We've actually seen Sanchez play at a high level at certain points of his career. Gabbert hasn't even shown he belongs in the league yet.

That's not fair Gabbert played on maybe the worst team in the whole NFL. Sanchez had a good enough team to make the SB and he couldn't get them there. If Gabbert was the QB for those Jets he could have been just as good as Sanchez.

As long as they are "rehabbing" or developing QBs, I think Sanchez could have been a better choice. More expensive? But no draft pick. More experienced with more wins in the playoffs. Trading for Gabbert and trying to lower the contract perhaps affects extension talks with Kaepernick less than signing Sanchez for more than Kaepernick is paid.

My guess they are targeting a QB in the second round and used this as proactive insurance just in case.

yep.

similar (not same) to Baalke signing Dahl prior to drafting Reid, proactive insurance.
