i will tell you their cap situation. if they sign hamhuis for 4 mil, they have enough to re sign carcillo, a guy for 1 mil, and a goalie for around 2.5 mil.

according to tim p, the flyers will try to make a move for a goalie at the draft.

the flyers do have some ufa's and rfa's although most only make around 800k and are not due for raises. the only person getting a reasonable raise will be coburn.

i dunno...it just seems like one of those things where someone's gotta be left out. that's a lot of people to sign with only 8 mil. not to be a negative nancy (though it IS the flyers :P), but it seems like it's another year with the goalie being forgotten. if they sign hamuis (and i feel like he'll be overpaid because it's before he gets to test the market) it'll be at least half of their remaining cap. so you have 4 mil for the rest of the holes (ie goalie). i just think, this is personal i suppose, that you should focus spending on a goalie before a Dman...especially when they already have some fairly solid D.

Great points Pix.

I'm just putting my trust in Holmgren to get all the right pcs before the pre season starts.

well according to tim p, the flyers are going to be looking for a goalie at the draft. meaning they will try to trade for a young goalie. most likely one who is on a rookie contract. for instance, if they trade carter for bernier, we would have a ton of money to spend to replace carter and our goalie would make less than 1 mil.

also, i am not sure what they are going to do with coburn. right now the only holes we have are, asham, carcillo, powe, coburn, and leighton. carcillo and powe will most likely be re signed and i would assume they would not get much of a raise. asham can be replaced for not much more. so basically, they should trade 1 big contract like carter or hartnell for a goalie who makes slightly less. or a rookie goalie and then replace hartnell or carter with a free agent who makes slightly less.

7 or 8? how much do you think coburn will get? if you put hamhuis at 4 mil a year that means coburn makes 3 or 4 mil? i think coburn will get at the most, 2.8 mil.

I'd take Seidenberg over Coburn anyday. Seidenberg is good for 175 hits and 200 blocked shots a year. Coburn might get half of that with marginally better offense.

I have all the faith in the world the flyers will sign Hamhuis. The problem is when a team trades for a players' rights, that player and his agent hold all of the leverage in negotiations. The team is now under pressure to sign the player at all costs since you gave up talent just for his rights.

I do not believe homer would have made this deal if he even had the smallest doubt hamhuis wouldn't sign. It is just probably going to cost us more than he would have gotten on the open market imo.

I say he gets 4.5ish

We resign Coburn for 3ish. Leighton walks. Deal for Bernier at draft. We are set with the most solid DCorps in the NHL.

Not bad

if coburn asks for seidenberg money then let him walk and take the picks.

also, the flyers are about 8 mil under the cap. if the cap goes up by 2 mil they will be 10 mil under the cap.

Is Coburn arbitration eligible?

i have no idea. it probably would not help him though. look at his regular season.

That's why it would be best for the salary cap. He wouldn't even come close to 3 million in arbitration. One year at arbitration, and he's still a RFA after next year. Hopefully, he will carry his play from the playoffs into next season, earn a huge contract, and get the Flyers some pretty good compensation picks because at that point, one of the Phantoms has to be ready to take his spot.

ya thats the reason i dont think coburn will get a big raise.. especially if he goes short term.. say he signs a 2-3 year deal i bet he gets around 2.8-3 because i doubt a team is going to give up a 1st and 3rd (compensation for 2.9 and above) plus the 3.5 mil it would take to sign him.. he's pretty good and has good potential, but he's not THAT good

so from his perspective he'll want a short deal.. and the flyers will want to pay a little less than he'd get on the market.. so it'll be short and relatively cheap.. IMO

also i dont think there's any way hamhuis gets 4.5.. 4 tops i think.. and i dont think his price will go up for signing prior to hitting the market.. i didnt really look at it your way though, paying to keep him off the market, so maybe it wont go down like i was thinking.. but anytime you avoid a bidding war i feel like the price comes down
