It was known he was a punk. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Should BB/Kraft predicted the future? Followed him around 24/7? I don't get the point of this thread.

And let’s not focus entirely on Hernandez. The Peter King story says:

“At the same time owner Robert Kraft was testifying for the prosecution against his former employee, the Patriots were reportedly extending a contract offer to then-free-agent linebacker Rolando McClain, whose background was more troubling than Hernandez’s was at the time the team drafted him out of Florida or when it gave him a contraction extension….McClain was arrested in 2011 for misdemeanor assault, discharging a firearm and reckless endangerment. Two years later he was arrested for providing false information to the police.”

Peter King is an idiot if he thinks the Rolando stuff was worse than Hernandez. Rolando grew up in an bad area and had friends that were dragging him down. He did what he could to get away from those people and the troubled area. Rolando only has trouble in Decatur.

This was pretty much clear to everyone who followed his story. He never seemed to have legal problems away from his childhood influences. I know he did have an attitude problem with the raiders.

Hernandez however was not a case of trying to escape his past. He was the guy, it followed him where he went and he was obviously the instigator.

So they took a gamble, eh, money over morality, a revelation that doesn't make the Patriots look very good. Between the conviction and the pending trial, this guy is an accused mass murderer. Although NFL has its share of bad guys over the years, such is nowhere near the norm among NFL team players, past or present so stop with the Carruth and Lewis talk. Pacman? Really? They knew and the Patriots signed this piece of crap anyway. Pathetic and reprehensible. You don't reward "borderline" behavior or someone with such a violent past who was clearly still using drugs with $40m.

It makes them a typical NFL team. The attempts to foist some additional morality on them is hypocritical and transparent.

Name another team who rewarded a violent, drug addicted gang member with $40,000,000.

Just one.

You won't because you can't.

Consensus first round talent that every team in the league passed on.

Except the New England Patriots.

There have been any number of teams who paid players who have had trouble with drugs, the law etc,

Lawrence Taylor
Michael Irvin
Gregg Hardy
Darren Sharper

To name a few.

Here's some from last year. You can shift out the pot offenses on your own

I'm finishing reading the rest of this thread and O.M.G.

"they had no idea"

This guy had mental mental issues documented at 17. 17!!! Oppositional defiance disorder, he couldn't control anger or aggression. There is treatment for this. Why wasn't Hernandez helped at college level? His substance abuse was a warning flag. They have all the resources at their disposal for counseling, medication if necessary!? When are organizations like the Patriots and people going to start addressing mental health issues. It's avoidance is killing people day in and day out! It's a shame Florida and Patriots put performance and $$$ ahead of everything else. He dropped in the draft.... They knew why!!!!! Stop saying they didn't.

It's time to recognize the Pats for what they really are - a win at all cost, unethical organization that has enjoyed a "free ride" from the press. Like Hammer says if you talk about the Pats you're a "hater"

ESPN and the NFL Network need to detach their pie holes from Robert Kraft's groin area. They constantly push the limits of the rules. They continue to sign/resign players with terrible backgrounds and the owner has created the appearance of being the assistant commissioner. Someone justify hiring Lagarret Blount. Why are we still waiting for a decision on "deflategate"? How did the league / union let them fire Hernandez as quickly as they did without recourse?

Saying talented athletes are protected, shielded and coddled most of their lives is right on the mark.

Saying this is somehow unique to the Patriots is retaaarhded

Nice try. No one said anything remotely close to that.

Facts is facts and they make the Pats look pathetic, which seems to be a pattern with them over the last decade.

I'd compare Hernandez to Speedy. With his antisocial attitude and threatening statements, he must have offed at least a couple of cops by now.

The New England Patriots are the best franchise in football. I'm proud to be a fan.
They do make mistakes and signing Hernandez was taking the chance (on recommendation) that he would behave. He turned out to be a psycho. Bad for the organization. Bad for the families involved. Bad for the NFL.
Good for spirited discussion on a sports board. You think with all the cameras we had leftover from spygate we could have watched him better. Maybe that is why Welker left?

Patriots should be banned from the league and all championships forfeited.

The question was whether other teams besides the Patriots coddle players with major problems like drugs and violence.

They have, they do and they will continue to do so.

I know what staying at a Holiday inn express is supposed to do. Clearly you're not staying there. The YMCA?
