The Middle of Everywhere: NWI
Someone else started this topic back at CBS, but it never materialized. I'm not necessarily looking for the best players in each decade, just your favorite players. Most of us weren't around during each of these eras, but we've all done our research...
My list:
40's - George Mikan. The NBA's first true superstar, how can anyone not like him? Could also be mentioned for the 50's.
50's - Bob Pettit. Not a lot of parity in the NBA during the 50's and 60's, but Pettit did his best to provide. The NBA's first great power forward.
60's - Bill Russell. In terms of intangibles, he is the greatest ever and it isn't close and it never will be. Transformed the Celtics from a good team to a great one upon his arrival. His scoring numbers weren't always sexy, but he did all the little things: Rebound, start a fast break, and run the floor. Not to mention he's the greatest defender of all-time.
70's - Bob Lanier. A consistent 20/10 guy, a Bruiser. The Pistons did not get a whole lot of notoriety prior to the bad boys, but Lanier was the most consistently productive big man of the 70's behind Kareem.
80's - Julius Erving (Dr.J). The Michael Jordan before Michael Jordan. He was the first who brough flash to the game. Magic said it best: "When greatness meets class, then no one was better than Dr. J."
90's - Michael Jordan. Enough said. Say what you want about the type of person he was off the court, but when push came to shove, he put the game ahead of the fame.
00's - Jerry Stackhouse. "No matter what you do to me, I will get to the basket." That was his mindset. Should have had a ring in '06 had Stu Jackson not insisted on abusing his power during this particular decade.
10's - Shawn Marion. Here in the twitter generation where players are spoiled and babied, Marion provided a cool and professional approach to the game. And those 2011 Mavs were the only legit title team since the 2003 Spurs. Okay, maybe that's a little harsh, but that Dallas championship was the only one since 2003 that didn't feel watered down to a certain extent.
The rest of you don't have to include the 40's since the league didn't from until 1946. I don't care what kind of fan you are, I'm looking for some serious responses here...
