OJ def deserves to be in the discussion, monster seasons with shorter schedule
Before my time so I cant comment too much but OJ put up one of the best seasons across any position. 2,243 Total Yards in 14 games. Same 'AV' stat as Marshall Faulk on the 99 Rams and he put up those numbers with Pace, Warner, Bruce, Holt and often indoors. Higher AV than any year from Barry Sanders or Patrick Mahomes to put that in perspective.

I remember my upside comparison for Todd Gurley coming out of college was OJ. Didn't get there but Gurley did have a decent prime himself. Hard to compare eras, though, because defenders are so big and fast now. Had Peterson been in an older era maybe I'm on here talking about him like he is Jim Brown.

I hope you all understand that during that entire conversation, I'm picturing a bunch of guys, sitting at a poker table or the bar, just bullshitting/debating the nuances, all in good fun..as is always my intentions and hopes when getting into these discussions. I appreciate you all for engaging :)
My problem is you never bought a round, you bitch! :suds: :suds: :suds:

It’s always in good fun.

The reality is, everyone sees players accomplishments differently, doesn’t matter what sport or position.

Because it’s all subjective because of different eras, competition, etc.

Why I dropped Knox for Irv Smith in D1.

Was I right? Wrong? lol, who the hell knows? I guess I'll find out eventually.

"The party is over for Knox. Even with the Bills facing an acute targets need in 2022, Knox commanded only 65 of them in 15 games. That was down on his 2021 total of 71, which also came in 15 appearances. His red zone targets declined from 20 to nine. That could be an area where Knox’s role actually grows in 2023 — why would you not make this guy a red zone specialist? — but that is neither a hope nor a prayer in fantasy. Knox is now a mere matchup-based TE2 streamer."

I own Knox in a couple of leagues and the outlook isn't looking great. The bigger problem is the alternatives aren't great either, so I'll likely just take my lumps.

The problem at tight end is that after the first 7 or 8 they all suck.

Tough to say. Knox was never more than a wing and prayer type play anyways. I mean, virtually all TE's not named Kelce are 'TD dependant", but Knox is another level of TD dependant. Dude can go months without breaking 10 ppr points, he just doesn't get enough targets to have a real floor above 0.

I dunno that Irv Smith will be any better though...tough to compete with Chase, Higgins, Mixon and Boyd, and he's never exactly blossomed after a tantalizing start either.
But, at least he doesn't have a highly drafted rookie about to steal those few opportunities he will have.

I'd even shorten that to the first 4-5
Kelce, Kittle, Andrews, Hock, Waller- then it starts getting real iffy, Pitts included.

But at some point, someone will break free, right?? They'd have to, right?

Yeah I'm not putting Waller on that list until #1 he's actually on the field and #2 he has some kind of rapport with Daniel Jones.

Hard to develop rapport with your QB when you're never playing. So yeah, I agree.

To be fair, he was hurt for almost two years and at least he's now given the chance to be the starter. What the hell, we shall see what we see...

70-80 targets, ~60-65rec, 500-600yds, if the TD luck strikes he could easily be in mix to finish near the top of that TE8-TE16 tier behind the TEs that get more looks

Andrews

Kittle
Goedert
Friermuth

Waller

Interesting..much more faith in Goedart than I've got.

It'll be interesting to watch that grand canyon between Kelce and the feild shrink once/if SF has a healthy, viable, QB, Hock won't be changing teams, and maybe Lamar actually plays a full slate.
Crazy that Kelce, while certainly head and shoulders above most everyone regardless, gets this massive bump in valuation, when the perfect shitstorm of instability hit every realistic challenger to his throne last year. That gap will be significantly smaller if some of that can be avoided this year..in fact I wouldn't be shocked if Hock or Kittle dethrone him this season.

I'm sure it will shrink some this year just by the law of averages, but there is no other person in all of football that is consistently as good as Travis Kelce. He might be the only guy consistently drafted in the top 3 rounds that hasn't been a disappointment any of the seasons he was drafted there. In the last 7 years, here are his tight end finishes:

2016 1st
2017 2nd
2018 1st
2019 1st
2020 1st
2021 2nd
2022 1st

As far as Goedert, he was #5 in points per game last year and offense really didn't add any pass catchers to it so it will still run through Brown, Smith, and then Goedert. I just like the offense and his role is pretty solidified in it as long as he's on the field.
