Man San Francisco only need somebody halfway decent and they could win this thing. And yet another reason that the trade deadline should be later in the year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Panthers are expected to waive QB Baker Mayfield.

well...halfway decent might be stretching the definition, but there they go

I think it was a bad fit from the start. Rhule gone, CMac gone. It was a bad situation all-around. No guarantee he finds a home though and certainly more likely to be a backup unless an opportunity arises like San Fran....

Unless his shoulder is still messed up, his biggest problem right now is between the ears. He's capable of QBing a winning team that doesn't need much from a QB. He's done it before.

But I think he's got the yips or something.

Easy - they need a QB and he's cheap. Stafford's almost 35 and on IR. Gives them options. And Wolford is dinged.

Niners needed him more, though.

but options to what end? finish 4-13 vs 3-14? Maybe Baker ensures they beat the Broncos, doubtful they can win any of their others IMHO. A cheaper option is the dudes they already have, which will likely result in the same outcomes

Need him and to cock block the 49ers ( pay back for losing out on McCaffery LOL).

I’d say they’re lying in front of the mirror pretending he can be of service next year if Stafford retires.
No 1st rounder for them.

well Baker is a UFA next year, so unless they work out an extension or whatever, next year is irrelevant

They can evaluate him, and if they think he's worth a crap they can extend him as Stafford insurance. This only makes sense if it's really about next year or later.

It was strictly to block the 49ers. There is no other reason that makes any sense. Sean McVay is not going to have Baker Mayfield as his starting quarterback. Even if Stafford's career is over it is much more likely that they just trade a bunch of future picks again and get somebody better.

I think the Rams would only keep him if Stafford is expected to play next year. Mayfield’s best value is for a team with a clear-cut other starter, but one who may not make it a whole season.

As things stand Baker is nobody’s #1.
