For me, once you've hit three zeroes you've gone too far - no matter what the trophy stands for. Trophies are most often nothing more than conversation display pieces that usually do nothing but collect dust. Kraft hit six zeroes five times with this one event. To me, that was a grossly excessive waste of money.

Big government is by definition financial waste, so I agree with you there. But in that case, they are spending money that has been coerced from people instead of voluntarily given, so there's a difference.

A business spending their profits on luxuries is not in the same ballpark as it's actually their money to spend. Like I said, people in general spend a lot of money on stuff they don't need. The larger a person's checkbook, the more money they typically spend. Criticizing an extravagant lifestyle would make me a hypocrite because to many people in the world, I live one. The amount spent on luxuries is irrelevant to the principle that you are advocating for, which is the principle that excess money should go to more worthwhile causes.
