So they are trying to create more injuries and less strategy?

The title of the article is misleading. It's not so much that extra points are abolished, but changed:

Roger Goodell said:
The extra point is almost automatic. I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (attempts). So it's a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.

There's one proposal in particular that I've heard about. It's automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.

That actually sounds like a good idea. 1-point conversions are boring. 2-point conversions, on the other hand, are actually interesting.

Sorry, Started a thread. Didn't see this one.

Personally I am for this. I mean do you really want to see an automatic 7th point?

So let's take the "foot" out of football? I hate this idea but agree the extra point is too automatic.

How about this: keep everything as is but move the line of scrimmage for PATs to the 18 yard line, so you have to make a 35 yard FG for the PAT. Still fairly high percentage, but far from automatic. Teams will be more apt to go for two, especially in bad weather.

The only problem I have with this is that I know its not going to speed the game up. They are just going to have room for 2 more commercials a game now

True. Sadly though no matter what happens commercials will be and will always be part of the game. But here's a good one.. STOP with the commercials after every change of possession!

Kick off - after commercial..... teams gets ball, players run onto field.... commercial..

I'm 50/50 on this idea. I do agree that extra points are 99.99% automatic most of the time, but I don't like the idea of just awarding the point automatically. As a fan of a team that has blocked extra points over the last few seasons, just the chance that it can be blocked makes it worth keeping.

How about moving the extra point back from the 2 yard line to the 10 or 15 yard line?

No. It may be close but it's still not automatic. Make teams make it.

In all seriousness... Not a fan of doing away with it. Move it back to somewhere around 40-50 yds. Make teams think twice about just punching it in.

Or... Maybe put the kicker out there on the field by himself and make him dropkick it if you're worried about the contact on the play. THAT would be amusing.

Rtule changes should make football better, does this make better? I don't think getting rid of extra points makes the product on the field significantly better.

I like this idea allot. Adds a whole extra level of strategy.

There's zero strategy or excitement involved. I could drink a 6-pack, walk onto the field and convert an extra point.

No. It doesn't add anything. It just speeds up the process. Its like the 'Free' point in NFL Blitz. They put in 'Free' because it was an arcade game and they wanted to speed up the game to get more of your quarters
