The Islanders have acquired Erhoff's rights for a 4th round pick.

Now all CHUCK has to do is get him to sign on the dotted line.

The Islanders have the cap room to overpay for him. Of course, if Ehrhoff doesn't want to play there, he won't sign regardless. If he does, the Islanders suddenly get a little better, especially if they manage similar signings throughout free agency.

I think the Isles need to stick to short contracts this year, no more than three years, for the most part, so they don't handcuff themselves down the line.

The Isles fan site is going nuts as you can imagine. I honestly expected something like this. Chuck wants the fans to vote Yes on August 1st. Erhoff will be the benificiary of this.

You do realize the Islanders aren't even at the cap floor right?

Yes I do. That's why I said they can afford to overpay for him. That's also why I suggested short contracts. It drives up the cap hit.

But in a few years when your young stars get to free agency, they won't be so cheap. You'll need the cap room then, and this year's free agents will come off the books. At that point, these short, high-money contracts could have made the Islanders competitive, making new free agents easier to target, allowing them to sign more talent for less money.

Okposo just signed a 5 year deal with a great cap hit. So did Grabner. Neilson will be an UFA after next season so they've got to resign him. Tavares will be an RFA after next year, but he isn't going anywhere.

Between Eaton, Jurcina, Mottau & Parenteau 6.3 million will come off the books at the end of the year. There will be plenty of money for JT & others.

Sure, but in a few years when you're competing you'll also want cap room and roster spots to sign impact free agents. Besides, getting to the cap floor is so much easier on short deals. Additionally, short deals mean if the player flops or gets hurt, you're not on the hook for as much dead cash. It also supports a high roster turnover rate, which I think is always a good idea.

The Islanders can front load Erhoff's contract if they want.

Right now Erhoff is in Germany it's about 3 AM so he's asleep. His agent Rick Curran said he & Garth had a good conversation. He'll talk to Christian tomorrow.

Ehh.. I don't know... Unless they just grossly overpay him (very possible), I don't think Ehrhoff will want to play for NYI.

I just always got the feeling that he's someone who likes to control where he's playing and would love to try out the UFA market come July 1st... and see all the crazy money people are willing to overpay him.

an hour ago. you even posted in the thread after it

oh well, might as well drop my thoughts here:
------------

they will likely knock his socks off with $$$
the Isles need to hit the floor anyways, and the tried hard for hamhuis last summer
($6.5m, I think jstew had mentioned) and came up empty.

I originally thought he'd get the lion's share of Rafalski's $6m from Detroit,
but it wouldn't surprise me if he just took a jackpot and called it a day.

Honestly this is really the only way to go for the Isles at this time. Chuck wants people to vote yes on August 1st. This would be HUGE if they can get it done. I'll be happily surprised if it happens.

What happens if this doesn't go through? They extend their lease?

Well the Isles have the money, but do you really think after all the years of struggling and an owner that everyone knows is insane that Long Island is an attractive destination for a top FA? Plus you guys still play in an outdated building with poor fan support.

If Erhoff has any sense, he signs somewhere else.
