16. Brodeur, by the way, had a great line when asked if he could see himself playing even longer as a potential backup to Cory Schneider: "I would be a bad backup ... I don't practise that hard."

30 Thoughts: Oilers' Dallas Eakins takes on Nail Yakupov | Hockey | CBC Sports

20. Will Carolina sign Manny Malhotra? He won 22 of 29 faceoffs in his first two games of a tryout with the Hurricanes' AHL affiliate in Charlotte, and is particularly lethal on the left side. The Checkers did not play last week, and it's believed a meeting took place between Malhotra and the NHL team. Obviously, the big question is his safety at the highest level. If he is not signed, it is expected several others will scout him this weekend against Iowa.

29. Last week, a Phoenix judge ruled against the league in its attempts to recoup $112 million in losses from owning the Coyotes and $6.5 million in salary owed to Wayne Gretzky from the team's former owner, Jerry Moyes. Attempts to recover legal fees and money owed to creditors (totaling about $26 million) remains in play. It is expected the NHL will appeal, because it doesn't need the aggravation of bankruptcy filings. Of course, by getting some of its problem teams sold, the hope is this won't be necessary again.

30 Thoughts: Playoff also-rans determined early in NHL | Hockey | CBC Sports

6. I asked a few people who've seen New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist: "What do you see there? What's wrong?" There are two things mentioned. First, the team defence is not good, which can make any goalie look bad. The second is that he looks smaller. In September, Lundqvist said he felt faster in the new equipment. But a couple of guys pointed out that playing as deep as he does, there are more shooting holes than ever. When you've got time, you can find them.

17. Now that Edmonton is seemingly cooled on making moves, teams doing the most exploring appear to be the Flyers, Rangers and possibly New Jersey Devils.

I definitely see a move coming soon for us. We need to add another big time scorer to the top 6.

30 Thoughts: NHL GMs want teams to pay for players' violations | Hockey | CBC Sports

9. Erik Karlsson had an epic scrum Monday afternoon in Ottawa, telling reporters, "You talk about me like I was some [bleeping] god or something. It's not easy to live up to that."

12. Mathieu Perreault, rejuvenated under Bruce Boudreau, had a great line about playing with Selanne. "He doesn't like to stop," Perreault said. "If you see him, he wants you to chip it ahead, keep the play going." What if this doesn't happen? "He goes offside."

8. Most of the reaction to last week's Steve Downie/Max Talbot trade was, "That's a weird deal." Downie's upcoming status as an unrestricted free agent played a role, as did a training camp skirmish with Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog. Landeskog tripped him during a skate, which angered Downie, who suffered a bad knee injury last season. He took a run at Landeskog, who has a concussion history, and the two nearly fought. That didn't go over well. The Flyers really like Downie, so there was a willingness to barter.

I like the other story better (because it's lewd, lascivious, salacious, outrageous)

30 Thoughts: Wild prosper from playing puck more | Hockey | CBC Sports

It was a tough week in Florida, where Panthers GM Dale Tallon was under a lot of pressure to do something. He really wanted to make a trade. But when that couldn't get done, he fired Kevin Dineen and the coaching staff instead.

fucker coulda had a big trade in the summer, but noooooo

30 Thoughts: Canucks brass must resist panic | Hockey | CBC Sports

Canuck rumour II: That ownership blocked Gillis from trading Ryan Kesler at the deadline. Verdict: Don't believe it. As mentioned above, Aquilini was well aware of the GM's plans. It would not be the least bit surprising if an interested team or two told Vancouver it could be involved at the draft, but not now, for cap reasons. Also, when Kesler said no to Columbus, the Rangers and Philadelphia, the Canucks may have pulled back because they didn't like the situation.

damn!
