If him/champ were both to retire that would do a number to our D

He seems awfully young to retire, particularly after such an outstanding comeback year. I will be surprised if he does retire after this season.

All that we know is that it would open up a couple slots for defensive back. Impossible to tell what impact it would have on our D until after FA and the 2014 draft.

It is a lot of veteran experience that the Broncos would lose unless they sign a FA vet.

He is 27 years old and coming off an outstanding season. How many such NFL players choose to retire?

I would shocked if he did retire. Dude has another 5-7 years of really good football left in him.

I think that the chance of him choosing to retire is about equal to the chance that he changes his name to Bison Dele.

He has been talking this way all year so honestly it wouldn't surprise me if he retired. I know he has a lot of good years left in him but if he would rather go do something else then he should go do that. He wants to go be a guidance counselor and that is a noble profession so if that is what he chooses then he has my support. Yes I would love him back on the Broncos and to be the heir to Champ's throne for the next 5-7 years on the Broncos but it does seem more players are making the decision to walk away from the game earlier and earlier.

EXACTLY! Which is why it's impossible to know what the impact would be until after FA and the Draft. If both were to retire, I don't expect Elway to ignore the position.

Well I certainly hope Denver doesn`t lose him whether he retires or salary cap issues cause the guy has been a fa godsend imo. Played amazingly all year. Denver does have a decent core of young guys though with Web,Carter, etc. Worried about upcoming salary cap casualties and I imagine if we see Denver go cornerback with 1st pk, that might be indication of one of them. My ever-so-not-insightful predictions on who might be gone next season....Woody, a Te or two, Kuper,Caldwell,Hillman,Kuper,Jammer,Wolfe ( I think injury/illness may play part),and everyone on current prctice squad are likely cuts.
Interesting names on Denvers current Reserve/Future list are as follows...
Mike Farrell OL 6`6 303 24yrs 1 season Penn St
L.J. Fort Lb 6`0 230 24yrs 1 season No. Iowa
Eric Hagg S 6`1 205 ( no age given) 3 seasons Neb
Jordon Norwood Wr 5`11 180 27yrs 5 seasons Penn St. ( think he might have played in Atlanta before)

Denver moved a lot of talented unproven players to the IR this past off season so kind of excited to see what they can bring to the table this year. I agree a lot of the guys you listed there is a good chance they are gone. My guess is Tamme stays while Dressen goes and the Broncos bring up the guy they have been cross training from the WR position to the TE position this season.

Wolfe is the one that worries me. He is one of those guys that I think could be a great leader especially for all the young guys we have on the DL right now. He doesn't make a ton of splash plays but goes 100% every play. His injury though does seem to go beyond just an usual football injury.

Now about the Corner position the nice thing is if DRC does decide to hang it up there is quite a bit of talent in the FA market. Guys like Grimes, Talib (really don't want him though), Tillman, Vontae Davis, Shields, Verner (this is the guy I would love to get but probably won't). So there is talent if DRC decides to retire. Still of all those guys would love to see DRC as he fit perfect in our system and would love to see what he can do with a second year.

He was actually a pretty servicable 4, but he fell off the map after the name change. Sad story about that guy...

Very doubtful we drop Wolfe. His cap hit in 2014 is $1.4 MM, but dropping him would still cost us $1.1+ MM in cap space.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Decker go elsewhere, with Caldwell staying. Kuper would either go away or have a contract renegotiated. Wouldn't be surprised to see both Dreessen and Tamme go.

DRC is a FA in 2014, if he decides not to retire. He and Adams are UFA, and Carter and Harris are RFA.

We have $16.5 MM in cap space in 2014 (if the carryover is still in effect.) We have $9.1 MM w/out carry over.

Chris Clark could become valuable trade currency too, since Ryan Clady is returning. Wouldn't surprise me if Elway and Co. decide to shop him around.

I'm not saying to drop Wolfe I'm saying I could see him deciding to retire. Whatever his injury is seems like it is more serious than some in the Broncos organization have let on. Usually some kind of report of what the injury is gets released and that just isn't the case with Wolfe so the Broncos are keeping this one behind closed doors.

Carryover is still in effect and the number last I saw depending on where the Cap is at is closer to $19 million for the Broncos. My guess is the restructure some contracts depending on retirements and such but my guess is if Champ comes back he is cut down to $3 million or so and a couple of other players like Kuper and even Manning has said he would restructure if needed.

Broncos are actually looking pretty good cap wise and if all else fails they can have the big cap hits come into play once they know Manning is retiring opening up close to $20 million in cap space. A great example is Dumervil for the Ravens where his cap hit was only $2.5 million this past season. Teams can back load contracts and my guess is the Broncos do that with at least 2-3 of the higher priced guys.

There is definitely not enough info out there to even speculate on Wolfe for 2014, and I'd personally be very surprised to see a retirement in his near future based on what is known. His report just says "illness", and based on the fact he played several weeks beforehand, I have doubts it has anything to do with preseason. Actually sounds a LOT like what Porter had last year. Regardless, he'd still count against the cap.

The numbers I got were from Sportrac just a moment ago. $ 16.5 MM was based on a $126 MM cap for next year.

While Kuper said he'd restructure, I still see him possibly going elsewhere, mainly because of health. Wouldn't help much to re-neg his contract if he still ended up not playing much. I doubt we will have to restructure anything for 2014 anyway, since we still have plenty of space to work with. Dropping or trading away Dreessen and/or Tamme would free up at least $3 MM. Both together represent $6.7 MM of cap space w/ only $1.1 MM dead money generated if both were released outright.

Yeah Walker I think what me and Cd were saying is that "yes" we don`t know severity of Wolfes illness and that we sure hope it`s not career threatning but if it was, he just might not be a Bronco next yr. I certainly and sure Cd and everyone else here, hopes he`ll be fine ( seizures/ possible spine injury is never something to take lightly) and have great future with Denver. On another note, I sure as hell would keep Clark around not just because of exceptional job he`s done but with the injuries the way they are now,esp on O-line,he`s extremely valuable imo.

This doesn't surprise me. He wants a long term deal. What is he getting paid this year, $5 million I think? I'd offer him a 3 year $15 deal and start negotiating there.

Sadly unless he takes a big time pay cut, I don't see Champ playing for the Broncos next season. You can't afford to lose him and DRC in my opinion. I'd say that DRC is the Broncos most important pending free agent.
