And yet, our defensive backs coach was apparently the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Why exactly does everyone have a hard on about Vance Joseph? What exactly did he do?
Turned multiple washed up vets who were crap everywhere else into top flight CBs. Jones, Newman, Hall, etc.

What?

He didn't coach for us until 2014. By that point, Newman was already in his last year here..... Hall was a shadow of what he was.... And Jones was already rehabilitated.

What he didn't do was improve Dre and develop Dennard.

Dennard hasn't really gotten a chance. Jones is a stud, Kirk is gonna play because he was a 1st round pick first. Same with Hall.

Yeah, but what did Vance Joseph do for Hall or Jones? You gave him credit for Newman, Hall and Jones. The only year he coached Newman was his last with the Bengals (and his worse). The two years he coached Hall were his worst. Dennard looked lost in there this year and Kirkpatrick hasn't improved a lick.

Neither Hall nor Kirk have played like 1st round talents, though. If Dennard can't beat either of those guys out, we've clearly got an issue.

Simple fact is we have 3 1st round CBs on our roster and they're all average to below average.

Do you know our HC? You think he is putting Dennard in over any of them regardless of talent, you are insane.

From what I saw of Dennard he didn't seem to earn it. He looked lost out there.

BTW - I was a huge fan of picking Dennard. I thought he was an absolute steal.

Sooo what do we call Marvin? Plenty of guys love to talk about how he drafts and how great of a GM he may be. I'd actually argue you the opposite. We were SO bad at drafting prior to him coming, that any success is overplayed. I actually think we've blown a ton of draft picks the last couple years (and planned on posting on it sometime this offseason when I have time).

So if Marvin can't draft, then doesn't play the best talent, in what world is he fit to be a HC? or GM for that matter?

Honestly, I'm starting to believe that the one thing that (somewhat surprisingly) works is continuity..... I think the Bengals are succeeding by not changing a lot. I think the Panthers are a pretty good example of it.... People thought Rivera was an idiot a few seasons ago, and now they'll be in the super bowl. Meanwhile, all the terrible teams in the NFL (and there are about 15 of them), change coaches every 2 seasons.

I agree, it's helpful, and we clearly have a better roster than we have had in the past.

However, how many teams, especially playoff caliber teams trying to get over the hump, literally had zero contribution from their entire last draft class?

We need to do more with talent. Acquire more, find more, whatever.

Look at our last 3 drafts...we have like 3 true contributors. 27 picks.

The 2014 draft had some high hopes.

Dennard - Still on the fence with him.
Hill - Wow, did he fall
Clark - I keep hearing he's going to be good. But he can't get on the field.
Bodine - 2 year starter. Sorta sucks.
McCarron - Heck of a qb for a 5th rounder. He'll probably start somewhere else within the next 3 seasons.
James Wright - Interesting pick. Looked good as a rookie. Is he still alive?

Dennard still has hope.
Hill still has hope too. I think he tried to do too much at times and it doesn't help our OC blows.
Clarke same as you hear.
Bodine blows.
McCarron backup QB
Wright good special teams player. was hurt all year.

I was all for getting rid of Marv and keeping Zimmer and Hue as HC and I'm thinking the same thing with Geunther.

I think Hill can bounce back, but the shelf-life of a running back is short. I don't see him as a guy that we'll be relevant 5 years from now.

I have high hopes for Clarke..... Hard to get playing time when you're behind Dunlap and Johnson.

I disagree about McCarron. I'd take him as a starter for at least 12 teams next season.

McCarron will have to wait in line for someone to get injured like every other backup qb.

we need a running back who can create his own holes. NFL RBs aren't always the ones that were the flashiest in college. Hill will eventually end up getting an exaggerated contract somewhere else that we wouldn't match.

I'll be happy to make the homer picks. We could use everyone of those guys in the upcoming draft.

1st Round - LB Darren Lee, OSU
2nd Round - WR Braxton Miller, OSU
3rd Round - DT Adolphus Washington, OSU
4th Round - CB LeShaun Sims, Southern Utah

maybe mike brown will turn away from his "second chances" chapter back to his "i really like Ohio" chapter.

I think Dennard showed more than Dre when he was healthy. Says more about Dre than Dennard, though.

You can say we need more talent, but the fact is...where was that talent last year, at any position, going to start? It wasn't. No player drafted last year had any real shot of being an impactful player outside of injury. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, it seems frustrating to not have those guys contribute right away, but the reality is, this team was pretty damned good this year.

A lot is going to play out before the draft. F/A will clear up a lot of the direction this team needs to go in, but they've done very well with the "best available" at that slot. This team has done a great job over the past 5-6 years of drafting talent and getting impact from them (eventually). I think only GB has more guys on their roster that they drafted than Cincinnati. That says a lot about how well this team has done.

3rd round? I've seen some Mocks that have the Bengals picking Washington in the 1st.
