TE prospect Kyle Pitts' versatility could interest Detroit Lions

Pitts racked up 770 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in eight games this past season, earning the highest grade (96.2) Pro Football Focus has ever given to a pass catcher.

"I think he's an elite wide receiver and I think he's an elite tight end," Florida head coach Dan Mullen said of Pitts. "And when you're that, that's what causes the problem of what personnel grouping are you in, who you're going to match up against him?"

Lions head coach and former NFL tight end Dan Campbell has taken notice of Pitts' rare skill set.
"He's a different bird than what a traditional tight end has been, or certainly has been when I played," Campbell said of Pitts.

The Lions are evaluating all the prospects who might fit into the group of players worthy of a top 10 pick (Lions have the No. 7 pick), and Pitts seems to fit the bill. Of his 12 touchdowns last season, five came with him playing as an in-line tight end, three when played in the slot and four when he was lined up wide as a receiver.

Why Alabama DeVonta Smith Detroit Lions Best Fit NFL Draft - Sports Illustrated Detroit Lions News, Analysis and More

"With the offensive structure I anticipate under new coordinator Anthony Lynn -- which could lean on more play-action throws for quarterback Jared Goff -- the Lions can scheme for Smith. Use motion and reduced formations to get him off the ball clean, while catering to his toughness on deep overs, in-breakers and vertical shot plays," Bowen addeThe tape tells us that Smith has the chance to develop quickly in the pro game as a three-level target, and the Lions need receivers with dynamic traits to build this offense under a new coaching staff. They'll get that with Smith."

2021 NFL Draft: Best team fits for top wide receivers? Five analytics-based pairings

DeVonta Smith

DeVonta Smith
Alabama · Age 22
Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions

Projected 2021 win share: 0.72

Smith's consistent route running and ability to earn separation give him the highest projected floor and ceiling in this class of wideouts. The Heisman Trophy winner had the highest percentage of receptions in which he had more than 3 feet of separation at the time of the catch despite a defender being within 3 feet of him on the path of the route. This advantage carries over into yards after the catch; Smith's ability to increase his speed once he had the ball in his hands was the third-best in the FBS this season. Pro Football Focus measured him as the most effective receiver against press coverage across the board in 2020, with Smith leading the FBS in receptions (65), receiving yards (1,144) and TDs (13) against press.

PFF shows that Smith led the FBS in receptions (15), receiving yards (589) and receiving TDs (8) on targets of 20-plus yards in 2020.

agreed except one caveat. if we're on the verge of NFC championship level game with the roster and that RB fits plus you see a 3-4 year run with that roster then sign that player but an decent out in year 3 or 4.

Swift might just change your mind when we're playoff ready in 2023.
Keep RB1 and draft, UFA or UDFA the rest if need be.
I could live with that if the money is not too big and we can be out in year 3. RBs just are not worth signing long term after their first 4 to 5 years. There are exceptions but they are few and far between.

Fantasy Football: Projecting the top rookie safeties for IDP | Fantasy Football News, Rankings and Projections | PFF

1. TREVON MOEHRIG, TCU

His biggest strength is in coverage, having forced more incompletions (22) than any other safety since 2019 while allowing just a 54.9 passer rating when targeted.

Moehrig has the ability to play all over the field for an NFL defense, making him more than just a typical deep safety. Almost one-third of his snaps came in the box over the past two seasons, where he played at a high level, earning a 75.6 overall grade from that alignment since 2019. Moehrig’s 91.7 overall grade and 92.2 coverage grade since 2019 rank among the best marks in the country for safeties, which bodes well for his NFL future.

We have no shot unless we trade back

2021 NFL Draft WR Superlatives: Best route-runner, freakiest athlete, safest hands and more | NFL Draft | PFF

BEST ROUTE-RUNNER: DEVONTA SMITH, ALABAMA

This is how a 170-pounder can light college football on fire in a way we’ve never seen before. Smith simply doesn’t let cornerbacks get their hands on him. The nuance and polish in his route-running is unlike anything we have seen from any receiver prospect we’ve graded. You won’t find Smith “going through the motions” any time soon on tape.

We wont really know how good either of them are until they play apart at the NFL level. The question is can either of them carry an offense.

If we took Waddle for the slot that is the missing link IMO. Already added Perriman and Williams outside and Hock inside as well. I would love to have another in this draft but we need to make a deal for that to happen. Maybe like you said trade back in round 2 and get another 4th.

The goal here is to demonstrate the levels of talent that should be available in each round, not advocating for any one path. Keep in mind the off-ball LB spot is one that GM Brad Holmes, senior assistant John Dorsey and head coach Dan Campbell have all not valued above the middle rounds in any of their prior stops, however.

The players listed here are generally projected as fits in the top 10 picks of the round listed

BB_72: Davis makes no sense as fits in top 10 picks of round listed. hhhmmm

Lions 2021 draft: A linebacker for every round (usatoday.com)

First round: Jamin Davis, Kentucky

Second round: Baron Browning, Ohio State

Third round: Jabril Cox, LSU

Fourth round: Chazz Surratt, North Carolina

Fifth round: Derrick Barnes, Purdue

Sixth round: Tony Fields, West Virginia

Seventh round: Grant Stuard, Houston

BB_72: outside of not being a so-called not above mid-round off-ball LB, Browning makes sense as an in-waiting MIKE to take over for Jamie Collins

I'm surprised that Pete Werner didn't make it for round 4 and same for Garrett Wallow either 5th or at worse 6th round
