Not great to hear, especially considering he very well could get a look at the majors this year. I'd personally much prefer to see Fraley in the outfield than Dylan Moore. Mallex Smith has improved substantially in centerfield since his demotion to AAA, but I'll be curious to see if they put Fraley in CF and put Smith on one of the corner spots. Mariners would certainly have a hell of a lot of speed out there with Fraley and Smith.
It'll be interesting to see how the Mariners divide up playing time in the outfield once Haniger gets back.
They already demoted Smith to RF with the signing of Broxton so I believe they understand that Smith is doable in CF but better suited in a corner spot.
Personally, I would trade Smith. He lost value with his play in CF and he is a contact hitter that strikes out a lot and pulls everything. He should be a spray hitter and use his speed. 101 K's in 406 PA's. 2nd in K's on the team for a leadoff hitter. That stinks as much as a leadoff hitter that can't walk (Gordon). He has K's more than Vogelbach in the same amount of PA's. That kills.
Didn't notice them shifting him to RF.
I wouldn't entirely disagree with trading Smith, but I have my reservations. First I have to admit that I have some weird affinity for speed guys so I am probably a bit biased because I want to see him succeed. If we were to trade him it definitely shouldn't even be this offseason. I say that due to the fact that his value is pretty deflated due to his poor start to the season. Since being sent down to Tacoma he has improved substantially at the plate and drastically reduced the errors.
I'll concede the K rate issue to you. The most alarming about thing him to me is that he had a K rate of 18.0% in 2018 but it has jumped to 24.9% this year. A guy like him needs to utilize his his speed by putting more balls in play.
