Big time SSS, but Canario is having a tough year so far. And with Ramos, Matos and Bishop, he can’t really afford to fall too far back...

More on Caleb Kilian Stats, Fantasy & News

A starter on back-to-back College World Series teams at Texas Tech, Kilian turned down the Orioles as 20th-round sophomore-eligible in 2018 before signing with the Giants for an over-slot $397,500 in the eighth round a year later. He didn't surrender an earned run in 16 innings during his pro debut and might have begun to advance quickly in 2020 if the coronavirus pandemic hadn't shut down the Minor League season. He instead participated in instructional league and was one of the better pitchers in San Francisco's camp.

Kilian added strength during his layoff and showed increased velocity in short stints at instructs, topping out at 98 mph after usually ranging from 90-95 with his four-seam fastball in college. After battling inconsistency with his breaking balls at Texas Tech, he has added some power to his curveball and scrapped his slider in favor of a shorter, harder cutter. He also exhibits feel for an average changeup.

Kilian's lanky 6-foot-4 frame gave him more projection than a typical college pitcher, and if he continues to make the gains the Giants hoped he would, he could develop into a No. 4 starter. He repeats his athletic delivery and throws all four of his pitches for strikes. He could open 2021 in high Class A and push for a role in San Francisco the following year.

Weekly Team Performance (5/28-6/3)

(A) San Jose: went 5-1 last week. San Jose scored their opponents 24-16 in the six games. The loss was a 10-5 stinker, but if you throw that out, the Baby Giants' pitchers allowed 6 runs in 5 games, which is excellent! Ragsdale, Jensen and Harrison were especially effective.

(A+) Eugene: The Emeralds cooled off a bit and went 3-3 last week. They were outscored by their opponents by 23-25 in the six games. Highlight was a 7-1 win last week over Vancouver with Aaron Phillips throwing 6 innings of 4 hit, no walk, 5 strikeouts. Phillips is 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA in two starts.

(AA) Richmond: went 3-3 in the last week, with one game postponed which was made up as part of a double header. Richmond were outscored by their opponents 19-22 over the six games. Caleb Kilian threw 4 scoreless/walkless innings in his AA debut, a 2-1 win. Matt Frisbee, since promoted to Sacramento, won his last start, 4-0. He pitched 7 scoreless innings, 1 hit, no walks, 8 K's. Welcome to the Rivercats, young man!

(AAA) Sacramento: went 2-4 in the last week, being outscored 33-40 in those six games. The bats are doing well, but the pitching has been awful. Bryce Johnson (.344) and Thairo Estrada (.388) are laying waste to opponents' pitching. Joey Bart is back and hitting .347. McCarthy is at .299 with 6 homers.

Sean Hjelle Stats, Fantasy & News pitched six innings tonight, allowed 1 run on 5 hits and NO WALKS, with 7 K's.

Tyler Beede Stats, Fantasy & News pitched 4 innings, gave up 6 runs on 6 hits (2 homers), with 3 walks and 5 K's. He threw 78 pitches in those 4 innings. His control is not coming around as we'd like. And his ERA is now 7.27.

In the same game, Sam Long Stats, Fantasy & News also pitched 4 innings, with no hits, 1 walk, and 6 K's throwing 59 pitches in those 4 innings. This is Long's second appearance at AAA. He's from Sacramento, went to Sac State, drafted by the Rays. Looks good so far. He began the year in Richmond.

Fortunately for Beede, he has one option year left. His options started in 2018 and a 2nd was used in 2019 but he was placed on the 60 day IL in 2020 and was never optioned. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets dfa'd instead of being activated and optioned. He's 28 years old and isn't looking good.

I doubt it. I think he'll settle down and get called up this year. Too much stuff in that arm.

Hope you are right. I'd like Beede to get another chance with the team, even as relief. However, FZ has shown a tendency to quickly give up on guys he didn't acquire.

fair point. He's not a FZ guy, so that might work against him. I just can't see them giving up on him til next year.

I think that his rope will be shorter than a Yaz or a Talkman but I think he will still be given plenty of opportunity. He was pegged as the big breakout last year before his arm blew up. I think he will be given the season, at least.

Agreed, and he'll be given next year too as he will have options. FZ loves him some flexibility.

I do remember before his draft year there were concerns about his control, walk-wise, some here were cautious about choosing him and although he has had some streaks of OK control, I don't think he will ever help much on the mound as much as I would like him to. I could see a medium run of good pitching but I don't think he will be around long in the Majors, that is a 2 or 3 years form now. He will get chances from other organizations as do many other good armed pitchers who stay around longer than a lower drafted and lesser stuff pitchers. I think it wasn't a bad gamble considering his potential and I still have a little hope but as we know this happens a lot to early draft picks especially good stuff pitchers.

Why exactly? We don't have enough catchers at AAA?

Matt Frisbee Stats, Fantasy & News had a rude welcome to AAA today, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) in 5 innings, walked only 1 and K'ed 6. He gave up two homers. The River Cats won, though, 12-11, and Frisbee got his first AAA win.

As an added bonus, Frisbee went 2-3 at the plate, both singles.

It's like a buddy of mine (a guitarist) once said. "How many guitars does it take to make a guitar player happy?"

In unison now, "JUST ONE MORE!!"
I'd be fine if it was a better hitting or better defensive catcher. This guy seems to be average to below average across the spectrum.

Agreed.

"Hey, guitar man! Would you like this classic 1958 Strat or the Blue Light Special Guitar from K-Mart?"
