Free agency got underway this morning and the Los Angeles Dodgers have 10 free agents along with two players they options on, Chris Capuano and Mark Ellis.

Capuano has an $8 million mutual option with a $1 million buyout while Ellis has a team option with the same buyout of $1 million. This afternoon, the Dodgers official Twitter account announced the team declined options on both players:

It’s not surprising that both players were declined options as the Dodgers recent signing of Alexander Guerrero signaled that they were moving on from Ellis and Capuano’s price tag was too high for what he provided.

There was an argument to be made for keeping both, but it doesn't matter now. Both can still be brought back for cheap (if they're interested in reduced roles).

Sad to see Cap go. I really liked having him on the team.

I like both of these guys and applaud the effort they gave the Dodgers. What I didn't like about Cap was that he was too inconsistent. Mark Ellis is a true pro who has simply slowed down. If Guerrero struggles in Winter Ball I could see the Dodgers reaching out to Ellis at a reduced salary. Time will tell. It seems to be in keeping with the Dodgers professed goal of getting younger and more athletic.
