This is just another example of how remarkably foolish this lockout is for everyone. It's not even just shortsighted, the half of the foolishness which this article points out. It hurts in both present (obviously) and future. These men are billionaires, and yet they cannot see how foolish a business decision this is? I have a feeling many, perhaps even most, of the owners realize how bad an idea this lockout has been from the start, but their hands are tied by Bettman and the few owners who think this whole thing is for the best.

which proves to me this is NOT about money. its about breaking the union. putting them back in "place" of who runs and owns this league. this is all about ego.

By the way, I'm with esls, I think the NHLPA should file for decertification. Just blow it up and let's start from scratch. This season for all intents and purposes is over anyway.

And file lawsuits in a player friendly venue, like Minnesota.

With decertification, the venue moves from labor law with equal damages to antitrust law with triple damages. I think the owner's will look mighty poor in that venue when the Minnesota owner gave out 200 million of contracts with a knowing that he wasn't going to have to pay the full amount - that could make the other owners cave and reach the necessary compormise.

Mr. Leipold, you sir are the weakest, and with Bettman and Fehr in the mix, that is saying a lot.

On this day in NHL history: 1917 - the NHL was founded......95 years later, the NHL is grounded.

I have a feeling that somewhere the NHL Guardians are shedding a tear.

if they were the heroes we deserved, they'd have saved the season..

As a player once said, "It's a garage league."

And it's one hundred percent true. They should all be ashamed of themselves. :tsk:

The irony is that you could argue that the talent coming into the league in the last few years has been the best it has been in quite some time. You have guys like Nathan McKinnon, Seth Jones, and Connor McDavid coming down the pipe as well. Add to that the rule changes and the game on ice is excellent.

Maybe one day we'll all get a chance to enjoy it once again.

Also, Bettman is a double-agent sent by the NBA to eliminate the NHL, thus reducing the NBA's competition. Bettman didn't get the NBA commissioner job because he has been too slow in completely disbanding the NHL, despite his best efforts.

Yep. Completely true, Dash.

The irony doesn't stop with the wealth of talent, though. Financially speaking, it has never before been the cash cow that it was prior to this asinine lock-out. The jump that the playoffs of last year gave the league was immense. It strengthened a massive television audience in SoCal, and they are wasting an opportunity to grow what is Bettman's baby of southern US teams' interest.

They have no idea what the hell they are doing. It's like a bunch of dumb hicks trying to run a business that fell into their laps. All they can think about is greed.

Because of their foolishness many teams will be playing before a lot of empty seats when the dust settles. Phoenix won't be the only team with 5,000 fans in the stands.

Absolutely. Gary's whole plan of expansion in the southern US is being destroyed because the owners of the NHL gave one man too much power.

History of the civilized world will tell the age old tale of what happens when one man has too much power. The story rarely ends anywhere else but in failure.

I invest too much of my time in caring about this stupid shit. :smash:

I think giving the Commissioner the ability to fine owners & other management personnel is BULLSHIT. I truly believe there are owners throughout the league who want to play this year. Unfortunately their voices can't be heard.

if the do decertify the PA - there is no draft and no ELC contracts, so all of these cats can go to the highest bidder.
makes you go hmmm, but at least they won't end up in Edmonton

That is true - Imagine if you're an Oilers fan clinging to the hope of "we're building something special" and "better days are ahead" only to see it blown up via decertification.

/Getting ahead of ourselves, but just the threat of doing it might actually get a deal signed.

I hope it happens and by that I hope it kills 10 teams out of the league costing 230+ jobs of the players. it would clean up the league and solidfy the talent pool. fuck em all

Im ready to give up on the whole fucking thing

Even if the union decertifies and they reach an agreement, before that agreement (the new CBA) gets ratified, the union has to get the band back together. Therefore, it doesn't look like a free for all - although the players could agree to play without a union...

Mediators gonna mediate.

FMCS :: Who We Are :: FMCS Today :: News

Release Date: 11/26/2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen issued the following statement today on the ongoing labor negotiations between the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association:

“I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement. At the invitation of the FMCS, and with the agreement of both parties, the ongoing negotiations will now be conducted under our auspices. I have assigned Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh, Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney, and Commissioner Guy Serota to serve as the mediators.”

“Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS’s long-standing practice, the Agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice.”

Don't Fehr and Bettman combined have something like 9 work stoppages under their collective belts? Maybe mediation should have been brought in months ago?

:noidea:
