If you recall, as part of the Kovalchuk cap circumvention penalty, the Devils had to give up a 1st round pick in either 2011, 2012, 2013, or 2014.

With them picking the in the top 6 last year it was a no brainer to keep the 2011 pick.

But many thought that this year would be the best to forfeit given they pick 29th and many are saying next years draft is deeper.

Tom Gulitti (New Jersey Devils beat reporter for The Record) had this to report:

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice It appears at this point that the Devils have decided to hold on to their 2012 first-round pick. Still waiting for official word.

And now an update:

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice Deadline has passed, Devils have not notified NHL they are giving up 2012 1st rd pick. So, they're not giving it up this year.

Interesting decision to keep this year's pick.

I would think that they plan on dealing it. There's obviously no reason to make what will probably be their worst pick of the four.

I have no problem with it. Deep draft this year and they have the next 3 years to choose from. It is not the kind of thing you need to rush on. Yeah, I understand they pick next to last this year, but I don't see next year being too much different.

This is year two. Keeping the pick this year means the Devils have no choice, but to give it up next year. The 2013 draft is much better than this years crop.

As part of their penalty for signing Ilya Kovalchuk to a 17-year, $102 million contract two summers ago that the NHL ruled circumvented the salary cap, the Devils had four years to surrender a first-round draft pick—2011, 2012, 2013 or 2014

Guess so. Lou lucks out again. I really hope Parise walks this year & Zajac says goodbye after next season.

All quite on the Parise front right now time will tell. What goes on with the team physicals and potential surgeries will factor in as well.Does sound like Marty may be back though. Also dont forget devils will be gaining some cap space as well and its really just up to zach

I did too aparently we were wrong

I still don't know why they wouldn't pick this year to give up the pick. Better draft next year, and while the Devils might make it back to the finals one of these next two years, there's certainly no guarantee.

I think that the Devils are either hoping they can get the pick reinstated somehow in the new CBA, or hoping to deal it this year. I can't imagine they have somebody they want to use it on - it's the second to last pick in the round, odds are the guy you want is gone by then.

With this being a weak UFA year Zach is going to have his choice of teams. His hometown team is building quite the forward corps. It will be interesting to see if he wants to play in Minny. Some guys want to play for their hometown team & some don't. Detroit has the capspace. They seem to need another sniper. I really hope it doesn't happen. I mean they have enough firepower.

It's funny Parise was talked about as a possibility on the Isles fansite earlier in the year. Now nobody is mentioning him. I think more than anything else the fanbase has been beaten down so much by ownership that it's just fed up. It's gotten so bad that some think Scott Gomez is a lock to become an Islander.:L

Players fall every year. Look at Fowler & Gormley in 2010 or Couturier who was projected to go 1st overall last year going into the season. I think the Devils want a goalie with their 1st round pick this year. Fortunately for them there appears to be a couple worthy of 1st round picks in this years draft class.

I don't disagree that players fall every year, but counting on other people to screw up is no way to plan your business strategy. You make a good point with the goalie thing though, as perhaps the Devs need a goalie this year or there aren't any or enough prospects next year.

TIME SHALL TELL.

There are plenty of idiots running teams in the league. The guys running Edmonton aren't geniuses. Howson isn't the brightest guy in the room that's for sure. SnowWang have pissed off their entire fanbase to the point that it's completely FED UP. I don't understand the media's love affair with Yzerman. His defense is awful & his goalie situation is even worse. Hey Stevie nice decision to let Mike Smith walk.:L

Well to Stevey Y's credit, Tampa had proven to be the wrong situation for Smith. He went into a system that favors goaltending a little more.

I do agree that they may be looking for a goalie. Marty only has one or two years left, which would give that player time to develop. Waiting a year could put them in a tough position. Unfortunately, Tampa's in a similar situation and have better draft positioning.

Actually, when he's in the room with the President of Hockey ops and the owner, he IS the brightest guy in the room.

Which is the problem.

It could be worse. The Islanders have the 4th pick in the draft & only sent ONE scout to the Draft Combine.:L To my knowledge the only players to have visited L.I. are Murray, Dumba & Grigorenko. They apparently invited Forsberg, but he couldn't make it. They plan on interviewing more players in Pittsburgh before the draft. I imagine Forsberg will be one of them.
