If you recall, as part of the Kovalchuk cap circumvention penalty, the Devils had to give up a 1st round pick in either 2011, 2012, 2013, or 2014.

With them picking the in the top 6 last year it was a no brainer to keep the 2011 pick.

But many thought that this year would be the best to forfeit given they pick 29th and many are saying next years draft is deeper.

Tom Gulitti (New Jersey Devils beat reporter for The Record) had this to report:

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice It appears at this point that the Devils have decided to hold on to their 2012 first-round pick. Still waiting for official word.

And now an update:

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice Deadline has passed, Devils have not notified NHL they are giving up 2012 1st rd pick. So, they're not giving it up this year.

Interesting decision to keep this year's pick.

Shirley you're kidding?

It could be worse. The Islanders have the 4th pick in the draft & only sent ONE scout to the Draft Combine.:L To my knowledge the only players to have visited L.I. are Murray, Dumba & Grigorenko. They apparently invited Forsberg, but he couldn't make it. They plan on interviewing more players in Pittsburgh before the draft. I imagine Forsberg will be one of them.

all fairness though, the argument could be made that you need more scouts to go to the combine the later you pick.. top 4 pick you have a pretty good idea of who is going to be available so you can just scout the projected top 10.. somewhere in the teens you gotta scout guys projected to go anywhere between 5 and 40

(counter-argument could be that at 4 you need to draft a guy that will definitely be a difference maker, and soon, so you need to be damn detailed with those 10 guys)

My counter-argument is there are 6 more rounds in the draft. There were over 100 prospects at the combine. That's more than 3 rounds of players.

There are plenty of idiots running teams in the league. The guys running Edmonton aren't geniuses. Howson isn't the brightest guy in the room that's for sure. SnowWang have pissed off their entire fanbase to the point that it's completely FED UP. I don't understand the media's love affair with Yzerman. His defense is awful & his goalie situation is even worse. Hey Stevie nice decision to let Mike Smith walk.:L

He's had two offseasons to rebuild a team that was crap, top to bottom. He's not going to magically pull a defense out of his ass.

As far as Smith guys, 29 other teams had their chance to take him for free on waivers. I guess that means there are 30 dipshit GMs in the league.

Also, NJ forfeiting any pick at all, must less a first rounder, is bush league. They didn't do anything that violated any specific language in the CBA, and they didn't do anything that Philly, Tampa, Detroit, Chicago, and Vancouver hadn't done (granted, they may have gone a little more overboard than those other teams).

I'm fine with the NHL being cocks about it and making them rework the deal, but losing the draft pick is a joke. How about we start removing a finger from Bettman's hand for every work stoppage? You owe us two, Gerbil.. don't make us come for number three.

Yzerman has 3 of the best players in the entire league on his roster. It's not like he didn't inherit a good foundation to work with.

I already responded thanks.:D: I know there is very little chance he signs with the Islanders. I think it's either the Devils, Wings or Wild. However, there should be 25 teams interested.

It was great thanks:happy:

I hope they give up the farm for Nash. If the Rangers are going to get another sniper I want them to pay through the nose in $, players, prospects & picks.

I read somewhere that the Rangers came close to acquiring Nash at the deadline, but the Blue Jackets didn't want Dubinsky in the deal.

If the Rangers give up Kreider, Del Zotto & either McDonagh/Erixon in the deal they're going to regret it.:D: One thing is for sure Sather can trade a vet making money in the deal if he gives up the young players CBJ wants. I don't think the cap will be much of an issue because in order to acquire Nash some team is going to have to give up a lot.

The problem with talking free agency trade and cap with rags fans is its like talking to a yankees fans.Truth is most are yankees fans :L If you heard what they keep telling me they are getting this off season you would laugh your ass off.I am also shocked with the names of the young players they are willing to sell for nash.

Clarkson you need to delete your inbox. I tried to PM you, but I don't think it was sent.

Anyway it's the opposite for Isles fans as they are mostly Mets fans. They hate the Wilpons & for good reason. I mean these poor souls are gluttons for punishment. Enduring Wang & the Wilpons. UNREAL!!

The Draft!!

The majority seem to want Murray, Galchenyuk or Dumba at 4. Grigorenko is gaining steam though. He did visit L.I. just as Murray & Dumba did. They tried to get Forsberg to visit, but he couldn't make it for some reason. The Isles will interview him & other top prospects before the draft in Pittsburgh. What I want to know is the name of the draft eligible player working out with Tavares & Moulson in Mississauga because that's the guy the Isles will probably pick. At least that's how it was last year with Strome.:D:

Garth is looking for a top 4 defenseman. At least that's what he told some season ticket holders. He said the same thing last year. Of course what Garth believes is a top 4 defenseman & what the rest of the league considers a top 4 defenseman are entirely different things. Last year Mark Eaton was a top 4 defenseman for the Islanders.:L

Most Isles fans are so beaten down they fully expect Scott Gomez to be an Islander next season. There's even talk of acquiring Tim Thomas because his cap hit would fit with how Wang runs the team. A big cap hit without having to actually pay Thomas would be perfect for Chuck.:help:

Parise is loved by most of these Isles fans. They talked quite a bit this season about possibly signing him. Yes, they're still ticked at Milbury for passing on him. Now it's not even a topic of discussion. They simply know they're team has no shot at signing him.
