Talk in Houston about the team taking the financial hit and getting Verlander. However, they still seem to favor the "Detroit pick up a big hunk of the contract approach". Don't see that happening right now...unless Houston throws in a couple of their best prospects.

Houston has 5 top 100 prospects, all of which would fit Detroit's needs (maybe not until 2019 however). Derek Fisher is a RF who is major league ready and already playing in Hstn. OF Kyle Fisher (their #1 prospect) is better and can play all 3 OF spots, but a year away. They have three good rhp's who could start if not in 2018, by 2019. Francis Marte, Franklin Perez, and Forrest Whitley. If Detroit eats a good hunk of JV's contract....I could see one or two of these guys coming in return.
Astros just lost a series to the White Sox...maybe they are nervous?

Tigers announced that Nick Castellanos will begin working out in RF before games....with the goal being to have him play some games there in September, if he shows the ability to handle the new position. Castellanos was the one who approached management about the possible position change.

The Yankees are looking for a starting pitcher with the recent injuries to Tanaka and Sabathia. Of course Verlander's name was brought up.
The Yankees might be a good landing spot for JV in an off-season trade, as NY might be willing to work out a deal by swapping contracts for aging players they might want to let go, like Chase Headley or Brett Gardner. But a trade right now would be your usual balancing act of ''money added verses prospects given'' thing we've heard before.

If you read back, I predicted this would happen in 2018, given the loss of JD and the acquisition of Candelario.

I'd rather they DH Cabrera if he is going to play, let the kids play 1st.

They might as well just DL Cabrera, Fulmer and Norris for the rest of the season. Why risk further injuries, this season is done.

Tigers should make full use of the waiver list. Also, as the AAA season comes to a close, Detroit should check with other teams and see what veteran minor league players will be released or can be bought, and see if any are worth a look in September. In the long run, will it matter if Detroit ends up with the 13th or 14th worst record in the AL? Their goal at this point should be - Don't Lose 100 Games!
