Interesting story about the "bad luck" factor in baseball. They use Miguel Cabrera as an example. The advanced metrics guys have a stat called Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA), which is sort of a catch-all value of a hitter's performance. A .400 wOBA is considered very good, and Cabrera's wOBA is currently at .360. But the metrics gurus have also come up with an Expected wOBA (xwOBA), that also factors in how hard a batter is hitting the ball and launch angle. Adding in those two factors, Cabrera's xwOBA is .445, which suggests he's had a lot of bad luck with hard hit balls.

Summer and warmer weather is arriving. That excuse for a slow start is over. Is there a lingering groin or leg injury nagging Miggy? Marital or drinking problems that are being hushed? Slump or Father Time?

Time for Miggy to hit like a $30 million man. If his power stroke is gone, at least he could bring the average up to his usual .300 level. He is seeing more pitches as his walk rate and K rate are both up. He just isn't making a lot of hard contact.

Click my link above. Based on the gap between his xwOBA rating vs. his actual wOBA rating, he IS making hard contact, just not getting rewarded for it as often as he should. That doesn't explain the low HR numbers, but does help explain his sub-.300 average.
