Al Avila is garbaage.Just turning the game on and.... yep, Zimmermann is still garbage.
Congrats, Tiger hitters! You managed to break a 104-year team record for strikeouts in a 4-game series with 49. The old record was 47 set in 1913.
Probable starting pitchers: RHP Justin Verlander (4-3, 4.87 ERA) vs. LHP Eric Skoglund (major-league debut).
Tigers lineup:
2B Dixon Machado
3B Nick Castellanos
1B Miguel Cabrera
DH Victor Martinez
RF J.D. Martinez
LF Justin Upton
C John Hicks
CF JaCoby Jones
Raise your hand if when you saw or heard the bolded part, you fully expected our offense to suck donkey balls....as in no patience at the plate, lots of Ks, few hits, few if any runs and the rookie lasts into the 6th or 7th.
**looks around**
I'm guessing that is close to 100%
You hate homers out of the two hole muzz? The two places our starters are injured (2B Kinsler, C McCann) Romine and Avila lead off batting.....Why stop there? Throw the bench at the top of the order......Why not bat Miggy and JD 8th and 9th......Shake it up Ausmus.
So... watching Matt Boyd struggle again last night, and just not feeling like this guy is ever going to amount to much at the Major League level. He doesn't have the stuff of Fulmer or Norris, so he has to rely too much on location, which is still not good.
He's really only pitched a little more than a full season (41 starts, 210 innings) at the MLB level, so I guess there's still some hope. But the career numbers are thus far underwhelming:
9-16 record
5.66 ERA
1.50 WHIP
10.4 H/9
3.1 BB/9
6.9 K/9
Given the Tigers' lack of pitching depth in the minors, I assume Boyd will stay in the rotation as long as he doesn't completely blow up. So we shall see where he is at the end of the year. My gut and the eyeball test tells me he'll struggle just to get the ERA under 5.00 this year (it's currently 5.69).
Never have really looked at Boyd as a longterm starter. He's a lefty with a heartbeat so he's going to get more than his fair share of chances. I'm not as worried yet, if he ends up being a #5 starter or a solid bullpen arm, that still isn't bad considering we got Norris as well for Price. And I really like Norris, despite some control problems.
