Not pleased with Ausmus staying with Sanchez for another inning.

Well, they are still hanging close to a Wild Card spot. If they can overcome the Indian Jinx, they've got a good shot at getting an extra game this season.

Don't know if this means much, but Tigers starters have not recorded a win since August 26.

Pelfrey, Zimmermann, Lowe, Upton... I think Al Avila has a lock on the 2016 Randy Smith Award (worst executive in baseball).

Tiger offense has often struggled to score early in games. Kinsler has had a rough second half of season.

"Pelfrey, Zimmermann, Lowe, Upton"

If Avila is still around in 2017, we can assume that Illitch still had a big hand in signing those guys. If he is gone....all Avila did was borrow the checkbook.

Damn Comercial Park cost Cabrera a 3-run bomb. Caught right in front of the 420 sign. In almost any other stadium....

R.I.P. 2016 Detroit Tigers season.

To get the 89 wins I think it will take to get a WC berth, they now need to go 11-5. If you can't win a home series against the worst team in baseball... if you score 1 run in each of 2 home losses against the worst pitching in baseball... you ain't winning 11 of the last 16.

Detroit is playing at the level I assumed they would be, at the start of the season....around 10 games over .500. I was hoping that would be good enough to keep them real close too (if not at) the top of the AL Central, in what I thought would be a very close race between Detroit, KC, and Cleveland. Unfortunately for Detroit, the Tribe got too far ahead early and Detroit just doesn't have enough talent to overcome it.

As for a Wild Card spot....Detroit will need one of those East Division teams to disintegrate to have a real chance. And even then, they will need to pull off something like a 5-2 record against Cleveland in those two series.

Yankees and Astros are still in the mix also.

But I think Houston has very slim odds. Mariners really turned it on lately. Kinda surprised me.

Toronto now has 80 as well. It's not the math, it's a gut feeling about this Tiger team. I'm calling series wins against the Twins and Braves (4 wins) and no better than 5-5 in their games against Cleveland and KC. The pitchers on CLE and KC have owned us all year. That gives the Tigers 87 wins, which won't be enough.

The only way I see the Tigers winning 88 or 89 games is if the hitters go on a home run tear. Look at the percentage of runs this team scores via the home run. It's among the highest in team history. If they don't hit homers, they usually don't score enough to win.

Of course, I hope I am wrong, and will be the first to say so (unlike doug). I'd rather be wrong and the Tigers get into the postseason than be right and gloat to a few people here.

This mirrors my feeling ... the Tigers aren't "chokers", this is simply as good as they are. Up-and-down. The reliance on the home run makes the hitting inconsistent game-to-game, and the bullpen has been wildly inconsistent as well. Those two things -- stretches of low run-scoring and stretches of the bullpen failing to hold leads -- keeps this team from going on those weeks of sustained winning (10 of 14, 14 of 20) that a team needs to amass 90+ wins.

Mix in the wretched starting pitching of Sanchez and Pelfrey. Yes, having a healthy, well-performing Zimmermann would have helped. But the loss of Zimm has been offset by some nice surprises ... Fulmer and (for a stretch) Boyd.

They are what we thought they were.
