Did you know that Miggy ranks #49 on the All-Time Batting Average Leader list (.320) just behind Charles Gehringer? What is amazing is.....as old as I am....I have only seen/been alive to see FIVE of the players ahead of him on the list. Ted Williams (vague memory of seeing him play on TV), Tony Gwynn, Stan Musial, Wade Boggs, and Rod Carew.

I like Rod Allen's line ... "The longer Miggy plays, the more black & white photos we have to put on the screen to show players with similar accomplishments."

Anybody know the Tigers record with and without Maybin?

Seems like it must be much better with him. The offense is definitely better.

I heard the answer to this on the radio this morning. Counting last night, the Tigers are 42-25 when Maybin starts. That means they are 25-34 without him.

STARTING PITCHERS
Detroit Tigers
LHP Daniel Norris (1-2, 3.81 ERA)

Minnesota Twins
RHP Jose Berrios (2-3, 9.28 ERA)

Daniel Norris took the loss in his last outing, a 3-2 defeat against the Red Sox. Rain shortened his appearance to five innings.

--Jose Berrios has been pummeled in his first year in the big leagues. He failed to make it out of the first inning in his only start against the Tigers, a 10-8 Detroit win in May. He's got a slightly above average fastball, but control has been an issue.

Do the Tigers pick up his $9mil option? His stats say yes...his playing time says no. And it isn't like this injury ''bug'' is a new thing for Maybin. Now before you say, 'Iffy is being a negative a-hole....' If you pick up his option, the "smart" thing to do would be to get a GOOD backup, in case of injury. That will cost $$$. Say you have to spend $3-5mil to get some veteran backup like Austin Jackson or Michael Bourn. Now you are spending $12-14mil on your cf. Just something for Avila or his replacement to consider.

Being hit on the wrist by a pitch and spraining your thumb diving for a ball are freak things. That said, he does have a history of groin strains and hammy pulls, too. But those haven't cost him the kind of time the freak injuries did this season.

To answer the question, I say "yes", pick up the option and take our chances. He is one of a few Tigers who can get on base and not clog things up when he does get on.

But it's not my money....

Some players just seem to attract injuries. I think Maybin might be one of those guys. Iglesias, as well. Maybin's 2015 was the first time he played a complete season in a long time. Gamble $9mil on a complete season in 2017? I think I would...IF I had a decent fall back option. In other words...something a lot better than Romine, Aviles, or Collins.

Yes, organizational depth, especially among position players, is a problem for the Tigers. It's never good when you have to go out and BUY organizational depth.

Even if he's hitting ninth, it's such a better lineup. (I'm liking him ninth tbh. Or Atleast not hating it.)

The speed especially. And he's been clutch all year.

Just hope his thumb can hang on.

So, speaking of black & white photos, they put this on the screen during Tuesday's Tiger game:

MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYERS WITH 400+ CAREER HOME RUNS AND .320+ CAREER BATTING AVG.:

Babe Ruth

Ted Williams

Lou Gehrig

Stan Musial

Jimmie Foxx

Miguel Cabrera

Id definitely like to see his option picked up.

And would have no issue with Collins as a fourth outfielder tbh.

IMO, Tyler Collins is an Andrew Romine, who can play fewer positions. Tigers, next year, need to put one or TWO guys on their bench who they can expect to clear a .250 BA. I am not sure Collins can do that, playing part time. Yes...they may have to pay for bench strength. They thought they did that with Aviles - it failed. The will have to try again and do better. A bench of Romine, Aviles, Salty, and Collins (or Moya) should not be repeated.

But if he promises to moon the fans in the outfield....I'd find room for Collins on the roster!

The question will be - how high will Miggy keep that average as he moves closer to 40? I remember Al Kaline's average slipping in his final years until it went under .300.

I thought of that as well. It is highly likely that Cabrera does not maintain a .320 career average. Still, the list of players with a .310+ career average and 400+ homers can't be a whole lot bigger.

He's brings solid D at all three spots. And is an option to pinch run. I'm not sure he's a .250 hitter either. But he's cheap as hell. With Victor clogging up the DH spot every damn day, hard to really expect any solid outfielders to come in as a fourth guy without overspending imo.

I don't need to see Moya again. In the field anyway. He could be a DH option if some team went crazy and took Victor off our hands.

Good lord, the Tigers are all over the Twins again. 6-0, bottom of the 4th. Beating up on the teams we SHOULD beat up on. Need to continue this against a lousy Angels team this weekend.

Ya know...burf and Ned Flanders never, ever, give me any "LIKES". LOL

Ned doesn't like me because I pick on my cartoon co-hort, dougplayer, on another thread.

Ned, I know you have never seen the Simpsons TV show, so you are unaware of the cartoon, within a cartoon,..."Itchy and Scratchy". Ya see Ned....doug is the dumb cat Scratchy, I am the mean mouse, Itchy, who picks on him. You should watch the show sometime....

McCann is already 3-for-3 today. Single, double, and a 3-run jack (#11). Batting average "up" to .221. If we get him going and Upton continues his surge, the bottom of the order doesn't look so bad.

Not sure WHO or WHERE...but it would be nice to land a good utility player that can hit. Does not have to be a defensive whiz...but someone who could fill two or three spots and provide offense. I thought Salty might do that as c/1b. Too many Ks and too few hits, however. McGehee is a vet and can do the 3b/1b thing, but again...over a years time, I see another guy struggling to stay above .200.
This is where your major league scouts come in. Who is out there that they can sign, trade for, that will help the bench. They pooped their shorts on Avila. Salty was a push. Work harder dudes this off season...it could mean some people's jobs. (Get Omar to check their wRC+)
