Detroit Tigers get good news on Jordan Zimmermann injury
MRI test on Zimmermann’s right lat came back clean, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, and Zimmermann is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday.
The team is not sure whether Zimmermann will avoid another stint on the 15-day disabled list.
He was shelled in his return Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. He had been on the DL with a right neck strain since July 4 and hadn’t pitched in the majors since June 30.
“His lat was a little bit tight, not really related to what the issue was when he was on the DL,” manager Brad Ausmus said after the game. “He just couldn’t seem to get loose. There was no pain, he was just having trouble getting extended and locating the ball. So we went with him as long as we could. But ultimately, we chose to take him out.”
It seems unlikely that the Tigers would use Zimmermann with the same kind of stuff he showed Thursday: a fastball in the low-90-m.p.h. range. If he is unable to make his next start, left-hander Daniel Norris would be on schedule to start against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
