smitty asked on another thread if Verlander was top 5 in consideration for Cy Young Award. I'd say yes. Or at least top 6 or 7. Right now, with Sale not dominating like he did earlier in the year....I don't think there is any clear cut leader. Quintana has looked real good and so has Toronto's Sanchez. Of course there are the guys with higher win totals like Happ, Porcello, and Tillman. If one of them gets 20 wins - that still carries a lot of weight. Fangraphs lists JV at a 3.5 WAR, putting him 3rd among starters. (Yeah, now we like those Advanced Stats, huh?) But he drops to 12th using the new "hot" stat xFIP-. (Boo, Advanced Stats!!!).

If JV keeps rolling, and offsets his poor start, he has a shot. Especially if the Tigers are in the thick of the pennant race and his name keeps popping up on ESPN all the time. (Perhaps Kate could do a little ''selling'' too? Afterall, another big award for JD means more $ that could be used for gold-wired support bras for the future.)
